Symptoms started on the evening of the 4th. Felt slightly feverish with a headache. Temp was 99.2. The next day, temp seemed to fluctuate between 99 and 102 (knocked down to the low end with meds), and started to notice taste/smell being gone. Extreme fatigue every evening that you can almost set a clock to (basically an urge to lie down around 7pm and stay in bed until the next morning). Early evening is also when bad chills usually set in... as in, under multiple blankets just barely able to get warm. After a few days noticed a *****ly sensation on my scalp and back (almost like a bad sunburn). Appetite is almost non-existent, but I noticed yesterday that slightly salty foods taste VERY salty, almost to the point of making me gag. No breathing issues yet, but a tightness/tingly sensation has set in which makes me cough occasionally.

Did a nasal swab test today at CVS... unfortunately they are saying results in 5-7 days due to high demand. Isolating and staying hydrated in the meantime...

And how old are you? Did you wear a mask and social distance?

37, male. Mask and social distancing, yes. Was on a beach vacation when it came on, and had been mostly isolated with family since 6/30. Can count on one hand the number of stores I visited on the trip prior to it coming on... and masked in each one. Only restaurant visited was a Subway to get food to go (masked in there too).

Where were you 3 or so days prior to symptoms? beach vacation? where were you on vacation and what were crowds/conditions like?

The bigger question on a mask is not whether you were wearing one, but how many places you were at that you can remember many other people not wearing them.

The mask won't protect you from catching it if you're near someone who is not.

On 6/30 we left Dallas and stopped overnight in Baton Rouge before heading the rest of the way on 7/1 to Gulf Shores. Stopped at a Subway in Shreveport for lunch (takeout) on the first day. Visited a Wal Mart for groceries after arriving in Gulf Shores. Other than that, stayed very isolated with close contact with family only. We stayed in a house where we pretty much had our own stretch of beachfront to ourselves. The neighbors all kept their distance the entire time. We were out of town a ways... so I'm sure the crowd situation could have been much worse if we were closer in.

I had very similar scenario. Started symptoms last Wednesday like yours, tested this Saturday with swab and I'm positive. You have it.

Day 8 for me and fever broke after 4.5 days and has made a huge difference. Rest, isolate and drink lots of water..

Good luck.

Think this is probably the culprit. Mask wearing by others was noticeably very low.

Did you do many bathroom stops at gas stations/rest stops on the road? Friend of mine has been in Florida since 6/28. He's sick now and is pretty sure it's Covid. Went and got a test done at one of those Doc in a Box places. He thinks he caught it at one of the places they stopped on the road to use the bathroom. They drove straight through instead of stopping halfway and they did no restaurant stops. They're staying in a house with private pool. Brought all their groceries with them from home. Socially distancing at the beach. So, bathroom stops seem to be the culprit to him.

Traveling with three small children, so we had a camp toilet in the vehicle with us for them to use. On most stops I managed to go find a section of woods to disappear into. Think I went into one gas station somewhere in Louisiana off I-49, so I suppose that visit could be the culprit...

I'm sure you have already done this, but I would let anyone know that you have been in contact with for the last 10-14 days that you likely have it and to make sure they quarantine.

So the rule of having to be within 6 feet of someone for 15+ min without a mask to catch it is not really valid or is this just a case of bad luck or an outlier? Is there anything he could have done safer other than use one bathroom on a road trip?

I think fecal transfer may be stronger than respiratory droplets. If you followed someone into the restroom that had it that's probably it.

Together, these findings have implications for our understanding of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. "Asymptomatic children and adults may be shedding infectious virus and they could transmit it. This is another reason to emphasize good personal hygiene," says Mary Estes at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas, who was not involved in these studies. "Physicians and caretakers of potentially-infected children need to be aware that stools might be infectious," adds Estes. The results are preliminary and further research is needed. "We are now assembling a much larger cohort to confirm our results and will test more patients to confirm faecaloral transmission," says Zhang.

What did you do in the bathroom? Just a quick wizz or #2

I recently traveled and used an n95 mask with carbon filter. I could barely breath while I went so I took it off for like 5 seconds to get a quick breath and then recovered.

It was a small town in Texas but I'm high risk and was not playing games. Seemed like a High travel Area.

My husband and daughter went too but we only used the bathroom once in Texas - the rest were isolated towns in CO WY etc.

My husband made us girls go in the woods one time... it was a little weird but it's not worth it.

We are in a town right now that has not had a case for 3 months - pop:1000

Honest question, why not? Do they only work in one direction? Really don't understand this reasoning.

N95 masks would help you not catch it because they filter out virus.

But a basic cloth mask that doesnt seal and doesnt have a filter, is only serving a purpose to stop droplets leaving your mouth from traveling very far at all. But if others are standing around you, not wearing a mask, spewing virus, the cloth mask isn't going to stop you from breathing them in.

I thought the virus was supposed to be contained in the droplets so wouldn't the droplets get caught on the outside of the mask?

Or is it in droplets and aerosol form and the aerosol will get through a mask both coming and going?

I use this: https://rzmask.com/ Says "officially rated as 99.9% effective and blocks out particulates as small as .1 micron (that's 1/25,000 of an inch) that those particles will not get into your nose and lungs"

Not sure how much it helps but it has to be better than a cloth mask. I figure if I am going to have to wear a mask, might as well wear something that protects those around me and myself as much as possible.

We are leaving for Florida within the hour. While this doesn't instill a lot of confidence, I'm grateful for the heads up. I guess we will take as much precaution as possible. No one goes anywhere without an N95.

at the same time there's nothing definitive about masking effectiveness regarding COVID

not every Asian country that has had success has implemented universal masking

so a little humility would go a long way here - it's a can't hurt might help measure that's affordable regardless of mechanism

What rules did I break replying to him telling me to shut my hoar mouth? Obviously I don't want him to die, I just can't help that his old man status puts him at an elevated risk.

There is evidence that wearing a mask is not 100% effective; however, there is sufficient anecdotal evidence that wearing a mask provides at least some protection not for the wearer, but those around the wearer.

There is so much we don't know about this novel virus. Scientist and researchers didn't even have the DNA sequencing until January 10th of this year. The speed with which scientist and researchers are learning, and moving forward on development of vaccines, antivirals, and other treatments is unprecedented.
