And to bring my point into this he had a very mild case.

I don't think everyone needs to wear an N95 mask, but a face covering will lesson the viral load.

I seem to remember that he was also with the person for a fairly long time and the person was asymptomatic at the time they were together. (showing the need for everyone to wear them)

clicking on that link and going to F16 will probably give you corona.
You should consider yourself lucky if that's all you catch over there!

This heavily starred thread on F16 got me thinking: Has anyone heard of someone dutifully wearing facemasks when needed and still catching coronavirus? I haven't heard of anyone being good with masks and catching it, and you would think with mask truthers out there thinking this is a sham, that there would be actual stories of mask usage not working.

Masks are dependent not upon you wearing one but on those around you doing soooo......

This. A properly fitting N95 will protect you from the virus. Most people don't get fit tested for these, or have had to use a different model that doesn't fit as well due to shortages. If it's not a perfect fit, then you can still get infection.

Surgical masks, cloth masks, bandanas and the like are only useful if everything is using them. The catch the brunt of the coughing/sneezing force of air and the water droplets. They also catch the spit that flies when people talk, yell or sing. They don't block all of the already airborne viruses. So if you are the only person in a crowd using a mask, it's not going to help you. If everyone is using one, then it makes a big difference.

Everyone in Asia, where mask wearing is ubiquitous, cases are few/low, and life is returning to normal, is reading this thread and shaking their heads.

Wonder what the weight of the avg Asian is? Wonder if they have better diets?

Since 700+ healthcare workers have died, I think there is a fair amount of anecdotal evidence that you can catch it wearing a mask.

But I dont believe anyone (of any credibility) has ever said that masks (any mask) 100% prevent transmission the virus. It is about making a material reduction in risk through a low cost means.

These arguments remind me of the arguments against condom use. They dont work 100% of the time, so why bother using them or encouraging them?

I'm sure there are many, but I could only find an article that around 147 are verified vs the 700.

People still don't get it do they. It's not so much about protecting yourself. It's protecting others. It's a courtesy thing. No one said you wouldn't get it if you wear a mask. It's about preventing the spread.
Dont tell us, tell the people wearing a mask while alone walking their dog alone. Tell the people wearing masks on the beach. Tell the people wearing a mask while driving their car.

Sure. When I see them I'll tell them thanks for doing their part to limit the spread, for protecting others, and for showing some simple courtesy that seems really hard to come by these days.
Yet masks helped no one in those circumstances that were mentioned! Were the birds protected on the guy's walk when he was alone wearing a mask? Were the invisible people in the car protected by the woman wearing her mask alone while driving? What about the guy alone on the beach? Thank God the whales and crabs and sea gulls won't get Covid!
Why do you care since they hurt no one? It's those who refuse to wear masks that can damage others.

Interesting because many of my least favorite posters over there have no Ag tag (some probably because it's their second or third post ban handle)

If you're in an area where the virus is airborne, it will collect on the outer surface of the mask as you breathe in. So masks don't protect you well if you're touching them often to put them on and off. That's why people leave them on and they are smart to do so.

I don't understand why that would bother you.
Doesn't bother me but its counter to the science I have read about transmission and counter to the logic behind social distancing. Again very few people in the media or the news is wearing a mask even when reporting from public spaces. I assume you think they should be.
Probably depends on the media you watch. Everyone I watch wears them unless in a single studio.

You're right, the mask serves no purpose there. I only wear when I'm going into the store. But why are you so triggered by the sight of someone in a mask? It doesn't affect you
Not triggered. Well, I do question if those people have serious OCD they may need to get checked out by a professional. Seriously. I have been very OCD in the past and had to get control of that. Call it concerned more than anything. Just thought it was funny that the guy would thank them when they did not do anything.

Yes, of course I was referring to every poster there with an AgTag, and not just the indivduals in the Op's link, and those that still continue to not understand the purpose/reasoning of wearing a mask. /sarcasm

If we had shut things down two weeks ago, we wouldn't even be having this discussion now. It would be on a downward trajectory. We need to learn from S Korea, Japan and others how to handle these things. They are able to go on with their live now. Meanwhile we are ****ing around, stepping all in it.

Who gives a crap? Why do we need to tell them to do anything? I might agree that those might be unnecessary situations to wear a mask, but honestly? They aren't hurting me. And at least you can bet they are wearing them in situations that do matter. Why do you care that they wear them alone? Sounds like an immature concern or criticism to me.

Agreed I guess they don't like to be challenged on their ideas. At least the corona board is a safe place for people to have discussions on both sides of the fence on this topic.

I thought the virus enters via your mount/nose or eyes. Thus wearing a mask can restrict it from entering the nose/mouth but it can still get in via your eyes. Also you can get it by rubbing your hands on your nose or eyes.

thus... it helps, but does not prevent
My doctor told me to go to the store and buy an pair of safety goggles to protect the eyes (he said glasses aren't good enough). You can get them at either Walmart or Lowes/Home Depot.

Of course nothing completes that sense of uber-dork fashion more than goggles, but when it comes down to the choice of ending up on a ventilator, or having a complete stranger laugh at my appearance, I think I'll take the latter any day.

And if anyone is concerned about mask efficiency, just check out the N95 equivalent filter material for sale here:

So you can have a mask to protect others, and yourself as well.

Some people die in wrecks even though they wear seatbelts. I'd prefer to improve my odds and be safe. Nothing is perfect, you can get a virus many ways - even through a poor quality mask in the right conditions. Safety harnesses break. These things are still good ideas, exceptions aren't prof they should be done away with entirely.
