Did anyone go to a high school football game Friday night? Curious as to what you saw

I went to a 3A football game that was sold out at 50% max capacity.

I sat around the 20 yard line distanced from others by more than 6 feet and masked anytime that perimeter was going to be breached by someone NOT from my household. (These were the guidelines from the UIL posted at the gate).

However, I was by far in the minority with following the guidelines. Most of the student body sat together without distancing unmasked. Many of the families from the football team and other locals squeezed into the center two sections between the 30 yard lines at what looked like 80% capacity. Very few, < 10% wore masks despite being well within the 6 foot distancing recommendation. They didn't skip rows between attendees. The marching bands did sit distanced on the track in the end zones.

To my knowledge neither school has had an issue with outbreaks and combined there are less than 500 active COVID cases listed for the two counties. Fortunately the games are played outdoors, and there was a reasonable breeze from the SSE at 10-12 mph. Obviously there was no routine testing protocols for the players of either school.

I will be very interested to see what the outcome of that kind of event (with lack of mask compliance/distancing) will be 5 to 10 days out from the game. My daughter plays volleyball and there is about 80-90% compliance with masks worn properly indoors (gym) and distancing.

I really hope we don't see a bunch of 2A/3A/4A football game outbreaks that ruin it for our 5A/6A athletes, schools.

Did anyone else go to a game and have a different experience?

For the students the outcome is going to heavily depend on if they get tested or not, since most spread in that age group will be asymptomatic.

Same here. A few masks not many. Social distancing non existent.

The thing is, nobody in my town has been very good about following the rules for a couple months now. Nothing has happened. There is a point where the boogie man needs to show himself or you just stop believing in him. We are there.

Went to my son's game last night. Stadium packed. 10% wearing masks. No distancing. As if virus didn't exist.

In our town:

Everyday school gets out earlier (about 1:45) and all of the students go to a late lunch. The online students meet up with the in person students and sit 6 to a table at the local burger joint. Hang out for 1-2 hours swapping tables and just goofing off.

No one cares anymore.

Football game is a fraction of the mingling these students do.

Craziest thing is our cases drop every day, our hospital rate drops everyday and everyday we move back to normal.

Thanks, for sharing what your community is experiencing...

Hopefully the geographic mixing of communities on the field will not reverse that trend in some of these more isolated small school communities.

I actually reffed a game on Friday but from what I could see, lots of fans close together with few wearing masks.

We wore masks when speaking with coaches and walking to and from the field but not while the game was going on.

From articles I've seen, outdoors in the wind and sun should provide some level (not all) of mitigation from spread.

Hardly an isolated small school, as we have most of the community working in the Greater Houston area.

Even if we see an uptick, we won't go back. Many of our businesses no longer have the "mask mandate" signage up and don't say a word to shopping without one.

You won't go back to a game or won't go back to masking up?

I plan to keep going to games but I'll keep following the guidelines of masking and distancing. I'm around confirmed and potential cases of COVID regularly and even though we use PPE (personal protective equipment) while at work, I don't want to take the chance of unknowingly be a source of spread to other's in the community.

At what age do people become symptomatic? I keep reading what you've just posted, but I know several college students who were diagnosed because of their symptoms. Is 18 a magic number?

I've seen symptomatic people who tested positive as young as 18 months old. The youngest I've personally seen hospitalized with very low oxygen levels in our small hospital was a 23 year old without other medical conditions besides being 27 weeks (6 months) pregnant. Fortunately she responded to steroid treatment with dexamethasone and didn't have a long hospital stay, but the CT Scan of her chest was pretty scary looking.

People can be asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic at just about any age.

Agree. Noticing more people out today without them.

Not football but our church went back last week with a mandatory mask order. Everyone wore them in and then took them off as soon as they sat down. Maybe 5-10% kept them on the whole time. It was so nice to feel normal for 75 minutes. Hopefully this trend continues.

Also went to a wedding in Austin a few weeks ago. Maybe 30% masks in the church and 1% at the reception.

4A here, sold out. 50% Don't recall see anyone without a mask, adults were spaced, band was spaced, only the younger kids in the crowd bunched together and they were all wearing mask.

You must be mistaken. Some people on this thread haven't been wearing masks and they haven't gotten it, so it's not a threat to anyone.
This thread is pretty mild re: the mask debate actually. Most, if not all, are just reporting what they have seen at games, not whether the people should be wearing masks. We all have our opinions, and no one questions that the virus can be a threat to the right person with the right conditions.

What is the outcome of the people who attended Sturgis? Initial reports were positive tests in several states. Did it spread?

How on earth did you get this opinion from the responses to this thread? Did a single person say they didn't think it was a big deal or that no one should wear masks?

I'm very sorry, but should the entire country remain scared to whits because someone had trouble with a virus that 99.99% of healthy people survive?

Posting this kind of anecdotal stuff perpetuates the fear. Stop it already.
I don't fear the virus. I respect it. Don't get those two things mixed up. They aren't the same.
