Face shields and valved masks two options many people find more comfortable than cloth face coverings appear to be less effective at blocking viral particles than regular masks, a new study shows.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had already stated that clear plastic face shields and masks equipped with vents or valves are not recommended, because of concerns that they don't adequately block viral particles. But the new research, which uses lasers to illuminate the path of coughs, offers a striking visual demonstration of how large plumes of particles can escape from behind a face shield or vented mask.

At our club this summer we cut through the lap pool to get to the family pool. They were doing swim lessons and the instructor was swimming in the pool with a face shield on. In addition to just being ridiculous that seemed really unsafe.

This just in: wearing a face shield while walking your dog alone on the beach makes you look like an idiot

"studies show" is like saying "the new normal" or "in these uncertain times"

It seems like the more comfortable the covering the less protection you get.

This will turn into harassing people for not wearing the right thing, It's already happened to me.

Because of the more rigorous CDC mask standards, our ISD is no longer allowing face shields, neck gaiters or single-ply cloth masks, which, to be fair, makes sense if transmission is a concern. Even our climbing gym is changing their mask policy.

A least officials are acknowledging that masks for the sake of masks is not appropriate and that some level of quality assurance is being considered and that scientific studies of masks are being followed.

As a next step, someone is going to realize that the other masks probably don't work either.

Yeah. Was insane.

I credit the club that they're just trying to get by and live within the rules, especially knowing a good number of their members don't give two ****s about masks etc. but that was unbelievable.

Very obviously. Face shields are protection against small projectiles like spittle, not against airborne particles floating in air currents that follow vacuums such as inhalation via the path of least resistance around the edges of a face shield.

Masks work for sure.

Fitted N95 masks that is.

I have both. I definitely prefer the face shield versus the cloth mask. IMO neither of them will be effective against viruses, but I have to wear at least one so I go with the most comfortable.

I find the anti valve mask crowd obnoxious and completely void of logic.

Why?

The valve acts like a gun barrel. Instead of dispersing droplets around the mask in a short distance it focuses them and fires them in a narrow stream for a great distance. This is the exact opposite of the intended use of masking in a pandemic setting.

As an FYI some places don't like face shields:

Yesterday I went to Peoples Pharmacy here in Austin to buy an over the counter medicine they stock. I went in wearing my face shield, was helped by someone, then someone else working there asked me if I "had a mask I could wear under my mask?" I said yes, in my car. She took my bottles, and I went out & took my face shield off, cotton mask on, and went back in. She then gave me the bottles, I bought them and went on about my day.

Places that have not accepted my face shield:

Whole Foods
Trader Joe's

Places that were completely fine with my face shield:

My dentist
My kids' dentist
My kids' pediatrician
My doctor - even was impressed with it and asked where I got it
