95 participants in the trial thus far have contracted Covid. 90 of them did not receive the vaccine. 11 of them required hospitalization. Zero hospitalized cases in vaccinated people.

Also apparently is stable in a standard refrigerator for up to a month. Huge advantage over the Pfizer vaccine.

Didn't the federal government invest a lot of money in this one?

Need enough time to expose enough people. The pfizer one was basically 200 or so infections from either group away from the endpoint.

There's enough available to distribute to most people by then.

Or at least enough to slow it up significantly.

I think you'll see hospitalized drop off in a major way once long term health care facilities are immunized.

My understanding is this wave has hardly any LTC as part of the hospitalized. That narrative was more valid for the 1st wave.

3 months of getting the most vulnerable dosed plus we start getting out of winter

I would expect a much better trajectory than we are on now

20 million pfizer doses + 20 million moderna doses + approximately 15 million already immune = potentially 51+ million people immune by the end of the year. Approaching 20% of the population.
Please tell me there's a special place in Heaven for Aggie fans! It's like we are living some sort of penance on Earth.

I guess it's older people then.

Get the older population and at risk immunized and this doesn't look half bad going into March.

Will obviously start with healthcare workers and nursing homes.

After that it gets tricky and the criteria may end up being controversial.

I wonder how this will go down.

It's clear fat people are more at risk, so do you just walk up to where they are giving vaccines and get it because you're fat?

Or what if you're an essential worker, how do you show proof of that?

I personally think outside of the known at risk groups it will be hard to get people to take it, so if you want one you might be able to get one pretty easy after health care workers/ Older folks.

hopefully all emergency personnel and teachers next

and people who work in public facing jobs far before us hyper-privileged that have been working from home

Great news. I've been following these a bit and the RNA approach seems very encouraging. Can anyone explain why the storage temperature requirements between these two vaccines is so different?

Great news. Amazing that there are 2 vaccines with over 90% effectiveness ready to roll already. Some simply brilliant people in this world. Light at the end of the tunnel not too far off

Just curious...how does that 94.5% effectiveness compare to the average effectiveness of the annual flu vaccine?

From my simply anecdotal perspective, it seems much higher than the flu vaccine. Would that be an accurate assessment?

I think the flu vaccine is about 50 percent in a good year.

This vaccine is much higher.

I think they still don't know if you can transmit the virus once vaccinated, but you don't get sick.

If it stops transmission in the vaccinated, at 94-95 percent effective you could eradicate it.

The government is already getting the distribution worked out. They aren't going off "essential workers" since that term is basically worthless. They are distributing to front line health care workers first, so to prove you are eligible, you would need to prove you are in direct contact with covid patients. If you are, there's a good chance your place of employment is already working with the government on securing your vaccine. If you are part of a high risk group, and are interesting in getting the vaccine, you should talk to your doctor. They can get you in line if you are eligible.

You won't be able to walk up to your local CVS (or even hospital) and ask for the vaccine for a while. By the time you can, we'll definitely know if there are any short term effects from the vaccine. Long term effects, that's a different story.

I'm glad there is a distribution plan.

That's what i'm curious about the most now. How it's getting sent out, who's getting it, and on what timeline?

Also, is the State deciding who gets it and when, or is it all managed by the federal government?

It's being managed by the federal government, and will be distributed through a public/private partnership. It's going to be handled similar to the H1N1 vaccine distribution. Distribution should be the easy part of all of this.
