Fantastic interview.

A lot of people have been quick to dismiss any changes to our lifestyles, in order to protect those at risk, by noting that the average age of those dying from Covid is the same or older than the average US lifespan. It is interesting to note, not arguing that, but when this 91 year old states he wishes to live longer to hug his grand children and see them grow up - it adds humanity to something people only looked at as a number.

Everybody wishes to live longer, healthier lives, but nature gets a vote and you should destroy someone else's freedom to buy you a few more years at the end of your road.

If you can get those extra years through your own actions or money, by all means, go for it. Otherwise, nope.

Name one freedom a government has infringed, and willingly given back.

I'll hang up and listen.

Pretty sure it took the public forcing the passage of the 21st amendment.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty-first_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution

Hardly the government willingly giving up power. They also reserved that same prohibition power for marijuana, so they just picked a different vice to implement the same social controls.

Also the government still hold regulations that are draconian on alcohol production and distribution.

Can not star enough!

There needs to be much discussion about the emergency powers we have codified into law because we never thought it would be a big deal. Set Texas aside. Many State have been "locked down" for 9 months by decree of Governors or unelected Public health officials. These long term actions must be returned to the legislators. Except they actually don't want it because it require actual decisions and accountability. I know, take it to the politics board, but this is actually a public health issue.

Ok. Well you guys keep on living in paranoid misery. I really don't know what freedoms you think you've lost forever regarding the current situation. So bizarre.

Seriously? What about all the small businesses that were forced to close due to all the lockdowns. You may have been inconvenienced but millions of people lost their jobs and livelihood.

A government does not have authority to force a legal business to close its doors without compensating them for 100% of their losses.

That is without question a loss of freedom.

Unbelievable. In less than 10 posts, you clowns have managed to turn a thread about a funny interview from the first person in another country getting the vaccine into more crying about freedoms and political bull*****

To be fair, the first response was political

Thats nice the he wants to hug his grandkids but they are still likely isolating and under quarantine just like the rest of us. How does getting a vaccine change that for the time being? Hopefully he doesn't want to travel, attend a soccer match or eat in a restaurant in California for the next 6 months or more.

To be fair, the first response was political
Was it? Wasn't intended to be. Only intended to highlight these are interesting, caring people we are talking about and not just someone defined by an age. Not just "83", but 83 with maybe great lives, extended families, maybe volunteering through their church or community, etc.

I can admit I've thought "it's all just old people and respiratory illnesses kill them all the time anyway" at some point along this pandemic. The video was just nice, and the line about hugging his grandkids hit me in a place that's been easy to push aside since I've not personally known someone who has died yet.

I think if you found it political you injected those thoughts into it.

Slavery?
Internment camps?
Curfews?
Sedition acts?
The right of habeas corpus has been temporarily suspended.
Various rulings on the extent of free speech.
I'm sure I could find others if researched.

You need to visit with someone who lived through WWII. Numerous temporary restrictions on goods and services were imposed in order to aid in the war effort.

Yes. And great response, by the way, The cry/laughy face really drove the point home.

I fully realize the lives and businesses that have been affected by all of this. And it's all tragic. But really there is no solution that is a "win" for everyone. Were we supposed to just go on about our lives like business as usual? Would you really want to see what the healthcare system would look like in that scenario? The reason there have been so many mandates is because a large number of the people in this country are too selfish and self-serving to follow the rules and guidelines so much of the blame can be on those people.

With that said, do I think some of the rules/mandates are extreme? Yes... for example, here in Utah they require bars to close at 10:00pm which I think is absolutely ridiculous and does nothing but harm the bars. The bars are being very responsible and have set very strict rules for themselves, and every one I've been to has followed those rules. Closing at 10:00 does nothing. I have contacted my Senators expressing my thoughts about it as many others have as well.

Getting that out of the way, I was actually responding to the post that said something ridiculous about naming one freedom a government has infringed, and willingly given back. I'm curious, once we get through this pandemic, what freedom will we not get back? Bars will always close at 10:00? We will have to wear masks forever? A restaurant will never be at full capacity again?

Just answering the question. Mr. Farmer09 should have framed his question differently if he didn't want people swinging away with the wartime examples.

Oh I totally agree. It's somewhat emblematic of the world since Feb-March. The framing of the problem, the goal and proposed solution(s) has been a garbled mess at best. Part of the issue is we rely on short communications via posts and tweets where intent is more easily lost, information quickly dismissed and poor word choice can derail.

problem is people die from other things besides covid. Especially 91 year old elderly people. The covid vaccine isn't some miracle drug that will automatically tack on years for people to live longer. Ridiculous our world is locking people up over this.

This isn't the first plague/virus to effect our world and it won't be the last. As someone who's had stage 3 cancer I was taught quick to never take a day for granted because you never know when it will be your last. I'll be damned if I am going to not live life to the fullest everyday I am blessed to be on this earth, because someday I wont be here. Whether that is old age, stroke, car wreck, shocked by lightening, cancer, heart attack, or possibly covid that does me end.
