One of my kids is a grad student at an SEC school and just texted that she got an email from the school that stated that all grad students would be required to undergo weekly covid testing starting next semester. Additionally, they have until Jan. 18th to sign a waiver that says they will agree to get whatever vaccine the school mandates or they will not be allowed on campus.

I think this will become common practice.

I also don't think you'll be able to go to a large event without showing you've had a vaccine.

How that's going to work I have no idea.

I'm also not sure the event will be worth paying the money for if they make you spread out and wear a mask even if you're vaccinated.

I guess it depends on what kind of event. I had 100+ at my wedding in October and people behaved normally.

Private events in certain states look normal now, you're correct.

I meant events like concerts and sports.

Can you post the email here? CAn redact University name if desired.

I guess A&M requires vaccines: https://admissions.tamu.edu/meningitis#:~:text=Texas%20Senate%20Bill%201107%20(now,first%20day%20of%20the%20semester.

Mandatory universal flu vaccines next if people comply with this insanity.

I'm not sure why concerts and sporting events would want to restrict their customer base after vaccinations help drive down hospital utilizations and deaths

why would they be liable?

Already mandatory for the military

At least for Marines, I assume it's DoD wide

Just asked my sister who is an exec at one of the largest arenas in the US (NHL and NBA city) and her answer was probably not, though you'll have to do the health questionnaire. So that covers both major indoor sports and large concerts.

Not just about freedom but also about how the hell you document it without some sort of issues certification by each state.

Can't post the email, because I don't have it. Won't comment on the exact school, doesn't really matter. I'm sure they are all going to do it...

They wouldn't be, and unless the industries got massive bailouts then it wouldn't be feasible anyways.

You can't have these arenas built for 90k only allow 45k in after a year of being empty.

Once the hospitals are aren't at risk over being overrun, and especially with a vaccine on the horizon, major events will shift to "come at your own risk".

Among other things I work with a group that produces concerts and festivals across North America (planning one for next fall, currently).

They've been at the front of rethinking live entertainment operations since the start of Covid and I have heard nothing about proof of vaccination to attend events. They're much more focused on leveraging tech and redesigning the experience to space groups rather than capping attendance given the ability to afford talent just requires a certain base income floor.

Just one anecdote I guess.

Only exception to the flu shot requirement, at least in USN/USMC, is religious exemptions. However that's no easy task. You have to speak with a chaplain, then your senior enlisted, then your CO has ultimate authority to waive it.

However, the COVID vaccine will not be mandatory as of now. At least for IMEF. Pretty sure it'll be the same USMC/USN wide.

Also, aren't mandatory vaccines already required to attend colleges? I had to turnover my shot record to A&M when I went there as a freshman. Just like elementary school.

Vanderbilt did weekly testing for all students in the Fall. So if it's Vandy, this isn't news.

The military has announced that the Covid vaccine will be voluntary because of the Emergency Use designation. I would expect that a public university mandate would be deemed unconstitutional because of that as well

Doesn't this open them up to various lawsuits. What about people with serious other health issues or disabilities that make taking a vaccine a large risk?

All schools have required a set of vaccines in order to go on campus since there have been vaccines. It's not surprising they would require the COVID vaccine as well.

Wavers have been granted on a case-by-case basis for other vaccines. I don't imagine this will be any different.

Yeah, I'm kinda scratching my head here on this one. All public schools in Texas require you to provide a vaccination record. If someone is allergic to a particular vaccine or has some medical contraindication, they can be exempted with medical documentation.

The big difference here is the emergency use authorization and a lack of long term data on safety. But, if you don't like it I suppose you're free to withdraw and find a school that doesn't make it mandatory, or homeschool.
