Why is vaccine distribution moving so slow?

Maybe because most people aren't that worried about the virus

Right now there are very few places to get the vaccine compared to the number of people trying to get vaccinated. A lot of smaller counties only have one or two pharmacies getting the vaccine and most are no longer accepting appointments as they are completely swamped with requests for the vaccine. Beats the heck out of me why the state isn't using the national guard to set up mass vaccination stations to unload the pharmacies who are not really set up for vaccinating a lot of people per day.

The shipped vaccine gets counted the day it is shipped. The number of vaccinated people is tallied from the state data, and it can take 3+ days for the report to trickle up from the healthcare providers, through the county health dept, to the state. If you factor in 1 day in transit, another day to schedule out the doses, there you have almost a week lag between the dose being shipped and the vaccination being tallied.

Because of the phased approach to get the vaccine to the right people. Gonna work really well for the NG to set up a vaccination station, have everyone show up and then they have to go through the health screening of each and every person to decide if they can get it today, then send 90% of the people who showed up home without a vaccine.

Flu shots are a lot of work for busy pharmacies. This is much worse because of storage requirements, scheduling, and phone calls. Without added staff, they can't do hundreds of shots per day. Maybe 20-40 per pharmacist.

The idea that retail pharmacists have any time to deal with a COVID vaccine is completely laughable. These people don't even get breaks to go to the bathroom.

Sorry, respectively I have to at least partially disagree. Screening the over 65's is a no brainer and should go very fast. The problem is with the over 16's with "medical conditions". I remember when I went for a pre-induction physical for the draft back in 1963 I couldn't believe the number of 20 year olds that were almost on their death beds with ailments that would keep them out of the draft. Not trying to make light of the folks with serious medical problems but definitely problems can arise with the screening of the over 16 year old group.

I live in a county of over 30,000 population with only one pharmacy authorized to give vaccinations. This pharmacy is due to receive 500 doses of Moderna vaccine. I'm on the list there with at least 100 folks ahead of me. I was told they don't know when they will get to to me but it could be the end of the month.

If you look at the Texas COVID-19 Vaccine Provider Locations Map you will see most rural counties have only one pharmacy authorized to vaccinate folks. Also, there are a large number of rural counties with no authorized pharmacy at this time. Guess where a lot of seniors move to when they retire?

Bottom line, expecting pharmacies with limited help to vaccinate millions of people in a short period of time is something only the idiots in Austin could dream up.

I don't think you understand that people are clamoring for this vaccine. They're lining up, spending hours searching, and are being met with brick walls. It's not that the vaccine is sitting there unused because no one wants it. It's because people want it, but the infrastructure isn't established for distributing it efficiently and quickly yet.

Tarrant County yesterday. Line was over an hour, and you had to have signed up. Your assumption is BS.

The Denton County registration phone line was busy all day the first day. That wasn't because a lot of people were calling in to let them know they didn't want it.

That should be at a count of manslaughter.

500 doses = 250 people vaccinated

.5% death rate 1.25 dead people as a result.
this might be the worst take of the day

Getting 3 million people signed up/vaccinated within a week on either side of Xmas is pretty incredible, imho.

Healthcare+government=it takes a while. There will be a huge inventory of vaccine supply sitting unused within a month. Also, the whole country isn't as scared of the virus as this forum is.
It's not like we've had 9 months to prepare or anything......this roll out is basically the result of a government that simply is not interested in Covid 19. If it's about fear, why are so many government officials who haven't bothered to wear masks nor take it seriously becoming part of the far too few to be vaccinated?

And that Tarrant county picture is in HORRID weather. IF the system ever assigns me a spot, I will have to take my walker. I hate to have to use it, but simply can't handle waiting in that kind of line without it.

Yeah, I felt awful for some of the older folks having to wait out in that weather. Kudos to the older FWPD officer up in front of me. They kept coming out to him and offering him to go to the front of the line and he refused and waited in line like the rest of us.

"A government" that is not interested? It's literally thousands of governments (just in the US) working toward a goal of a vaccine roll out in record time, with phased population groups qualifying separately, using an infrastructure that has never been tasked similarly with such a vaccine timeline/process.

The Obamacare website had years to prepare for it's go-live and was then basically inoperative for 90 days after it went live. Millions were vaccinated within a week of Xmas, less than a year after a new virus was globally spread.

Government officials...let's keep politics on F16. The vaccine distribution/roll out/execution is being handled again by tens of thousands of civil servants.
