Antibodies After Covid Vaccine

So I have a limited grasp on how the Moderna vaccine (and Pfizer for that matter) are providing protection. I get that they provide your body the blueprint on how to create antibodies or how to attack it. My question is, do you actually have any antibodies after being vaccinated without actually being exposed to the virus? Or do you also have to be exposed to the virus after receiving the vaccine to actually create antibodies?

I ask because if your body produces antibodies post vaccination, I'd definitely be interested in giving blood. If that's the case, the more people getting vaccinated, the better we would be able to boost our convalescent plasma supply?

You should have antibodies post vaccine. As I understand it, the mRNA vaccines work by causing your body to create the spike protein of the coronavirus (without the virus inside) so your body sees it and mounts an immune response the same as if you had the actual virus.

That's what I was thinking. I remember reading that people in the early trials were showing to have more antibodies than people who had recovered from Covid. Just didn't know if that was actually possible.

Is it difficult to test for your T cells?

Yes, it's a pretty specialized test.

Out of curiosity I was thinking about going to quest or somewhere within the next few days to see if I'm antibody positive. I donated blood recently so I can't get one at a blood donation because it's not time yet. I get the second dose of the vaccine this coming Friday.

We aren't allowed to draw convalescent plasma (ccp) post vaccination.

You can still donate, and we can use all the products (red cells, platelet, plasma(FFP,PF24, cryo, etc) it just can not be labeled or transfused as ccp.

Please go donate blood. You will get the antibody test and can check and see if the vaccination is working, but the need for your red cells is great right now.

Inventories are still struggling to meet patient demand across the country.

Find your local blood bank or shoot me a note and I'm happy to help you find one.

Soul, why not use the vaccinated blood? Just curious.

Easy answer: fda says so, and they regulate our industry.

Our docs answer: Ccp is an investigational treatment and by definition is recovered from an illness. the current thought is that the vaccination produces a different type/scale of immune response than that from someone who was actually sick.
