Got Shot #1....but here's the deal. A question.

I am sitting in my office on Monday and I get an email from my Dad's LTC telling me that if I RSVP and show up at Noon the next day I can get the Pfizer vaccine because I have been designated an essential visitor. So I RSVP and go and line up with a bunch of other people to get the shot. I manage to get the shot before the pharmacist in charge of the deal looks at the line and unilaterally decides that most people in the line don't really qualify for the shot right now and cuts off the distribution.

So I've gotten shot number one and I am told that when I return in 20 days time there will be a second shot waiting for me.

My question is this: What if there isn't one waiting? Do I have any options. And if I cannot get the second shot on schedule what likely protection do I have form just the one shot? I have been told that just having the one shot likely keeps me out of the hospital if I do get COVID. Any info appreciated.

In the Pfizer trial 21,720 people received that vaccine.

There were 39 cases of covid among these people between dose 1 and dose 2.
There were 82 cases of covid among the placebo group between dose 1 and dose 2.
The vaccine efficacy was calculated at 52% after dose 1.
The vaccine efficacy was 94.6% after dose 2.
There was only 1 case of severe covid-19 in the vaccine group after dose 1.

Obviously you would be better off with the booster but I would feel pretty good with just 1 shot - especially if you are not in a high risk group for severe disease.

Someone posted a very helpful chart showing the number of days post vaccination, will try to find it. It seems as though the people who received the first dose of the vaccine and contracted Covid were likely exposed either before getting the shot or within 10 or so days. That chart showed efficacy around 90% for people who got the first vaccine when factoring out people who became infected during the antibody production timeframe.

I had similar concerns -not because we got cut off but because demand > supply and specifically for moderna there are talks of halving the dosage.

However, we talked to the pharmacist and they said for sure they are reserving incoming shipments of vaccine for those who have had round 1. This may not be the case everywhere, but I believe places administering vaccine should be doing the same thing or have a similar system.

Here ya go. This is figure 3 from the New England Journal of Medicine article for the Pfizer vaccine.

They have to give shot 2 no matter if someone snuck in.

So does the timing of the second dose really matter all that much for the non-high risk groups? Like if you happen to get one this week, you can get the second in April or June and, vaccination-wise, it is just as good?

Unfortunately we don't know. It'll probably take a year or longer before we have enough observational data to give us a semblance of an answer to that question.

Right now all we know is that a single dose after about 11 days provides adequate short term immunity; however, most of those individuals went on to get a second dose, so we can't really infer anything more than that.

I got Moderna this morning and they said 2nd dose had to be four weeks from today plus or minus 4 days.

All the pharmacies around me seem to still be vaccinating 1A only. Where did you find a place doing 1B?

There is a very good chance that one shot is sufficient. Which is good since a lot of people won't get the second one. One of my friends (a scientist) skipped his final rabies shot because he had a trip to Europe to make. And rabies kills you dead. Getting 300 million people to show up a 2nd time isn't going to happen.

Also getting your booster is probably the same after 3 weeks, 3 months, or a year.

(This is not advice to skip your second shot or to deviate from the recommendations of your Dr, the CDC, or the FDA)

So reading this chart....am I to infer that my first shot will essentially reach it's peak effectiveness at around the 14 day mark?

Effectiveness seems to kick in almost immediately on day 11.

Tarrant County is doing 1A and 1B.

I have an underlying medical condition that, frankly, I don't think affects me very much but qualified me to get the shot.

Age for me. Tarrant county. I think we are blessed to be in a place that has a great distribution system.

One thing I think is happening - if a particular center is efficient at distributing the vaccine, they send more. Tarrant County has been giving it to Group 1B since before January 1 - Dallas is still on 1A.

Arlington FD is running the mega center at the eSports Stadium and it is the picture of efficiency. I was only there for 30 minutes and 15 of those were waiting after my shot to see if I would have a reaction.

We are back hybrid but have so many teachers that have to quaranine it is hard to stay open.

I know it takes time to take effect, but I do feel better about school, and two weeks after the second shot I plan to actually to into a grocery story for the first time since March. Curbside and delivery are just not the same and shipt shoppers are great but it gets expensive.

However our campus receptionist died of covid 8 days ago. So it is not in time for some people.

For those that have received vaccine- are you given some sort of certificate or do they mark in EMR that you received it? If in the future you need proof to travel or as Ticketmaster said, to attend an event, what do you have?

They give you a certificate with the dates on it. If anyone asks for my papers I'm going to have a hard time not hearing it in a East German Stasi accent.

Even though I got the vaccine I am firmly opposed to anyone requiring proof as that is not any of their business.

I was given a card with the date of first shot and the planned date for the second shot. It says to be ready to show it when you go for medical exams.

Got my first round of juice yesterday. I somehow got to "cut in line" ahead of others at my school that registered ahead of me. My wife also registered same day I did and hasn't got an appointment yet. Maybe just a glitch idk.

What is the difference between the first vaccine and the second vaccine? Is it just the dosage? Are the vials marked 1 & 2?

Didn't you post on another board that you lied about your weight to get the appointment?

Good for you that you got it but I hope you didn't take an appointment from a truly vulnerable person.

Yeah, I was wondering about this as well, my grandmother got shot one at a Randall's that is now closing and we are scrambling to figure out how to get her shot 2. Are they that different?

I think you have to have the same kind of shot. It may be hard to find a place for shot two since most are reserving shot two for us when they give us shot one.
