My 11 month old is now positive...

My wife recovered first week of December, and I'm on day 11 (mostly recovered outside of annoying cough and lightheadedness). Strange part about this is my wife had minor symptoms to the point we were skeptical she actually had it...until she lost smell and taste. She was still nursing our baby, yet neither of us ever caught the virus.

Fast forward to Dec 29th at a family gathering where most of my family and I caught the virus from a family member. I immediately isolated myself into one of our guest bedrooms, but apparently wasn't enough.
About 5 days ago, our 11 month old started having a runny nose, watery eyes, and much more fussy than usual. My wife finally took her in today and she tested positive.

I'm obviously pretty upset about it as we've tried to do everything we can to protect her, yet she still caught it from me (not sure how she didn't catch it from her mom over a month ago).

Her Ped said it's not in her lungs and to just watch her temp doesn't reach 102, but she should recover just fine and quickly. Anyone give me more piece of mine than this? Anyone have kids around some age that has experienced exposure?

Apologies for the long note...just a bit paranoid at the moment.

No advice but hope this passes quickly and safely for your baby.

A family friend of ours had it and it spread to the entire family, including their 5, 3, and 1 year old - she is also pregnant with their 4th (yes, they are Catholic ). All had some symptoms and runny noses, but no issues other than that.

Don't know if this makes you feel better or not, obviously everyone reacts differently to illnesses. But my son was 11 months old when he got it back this summer (both my wife and I had it as well). Mild fever, cold like symptoms, and some extra dirty diapers and he was over it by the end of the week. He also had antibodies up to like 5 months later, so there's that positive too.

Good luck and hope your experience is similar if not better.

Virginia reports death by age and we haven't had any deaths under the age of 9 and only 1 death under the age of 19. The deaths here are pretty much insignificant until you get over the age of 60.

It seems like COVID is extremely low risk for children and unfortunately there are many other illnesses that pose a much higher risk.

The data and evidence say you don't have anything to worry about with this particular virus.

Aren't there like 100 other common viruses that are a bigger issue towards kids of that age? Including the flu? Actually, aren't all viruses a bigger threat to kids of that age...?

Yes, I'm being facetious and half serious. Maybe.

Don't apologize for the post! This is exactly the space to do that. I don't have any suggestions. I hope for a quick recovery! Please update this post on their progress!

Our 9 month old granddaughter caught it just before Christmas. She had a high fever one night and then was croupy for two days. Good as new after that.

Not sure how many but COVID appears to be very low on the list of risks for children. Maybe equivalent to common cold? Less risky than flu.

It's pretty much statistically impossible for your 11 month old to have significant issues due to COVID unless it already has significant health issues.

That should give you peace of mind.

Thank you for the feedback.

Not a lot of information out there on kids her age, so I take that as a good thing.
The hardest part is her age, not being able to communicate to us how she's feeling (shortness of breath, chills, stomach issues, not hungry, etc)

I'm confident she'll recover...but due to this being such a new virus, I worry about possible long term effects.
I have absolutely no science basis to worry about it, it's just something I think about.

Good to hear similar stories that resulted in quick recovery.

My 2 year old and 4 year old had it and had very minor symptoms that honestly could have been attributed to other things.

Hopefully the virus will pass easily for your baby. Perhaps the fact that she was nursing just a month ago and through your wife's illness will lead to a better ability to fight it! Don't worry, we'd all feel the same way with our baby involved.

COVID is essentially harmless for children. Flu & RSV are much worse.

I've seen the rumor of 'long term consequences' here from time to time, seeming to imply that even with minimal or no symptoms somehow the virus will lurk and create organ problems later. Thoughts? (I don't buy into that at all, just wondering from a doc perspective what your thoughts are)

I mean if it's as New as they say then how would they potentially know that?

I want to know, medically, if something can lurk in your system long term and do damage without showing itself as symptoms initially.

I think this is probably a reach. I am much, much more concerned with children's social and emotional development than this virus but I am not a doc. The medium term consequences to children continuing to isolate and remote learn are much more dire imo than this virus.

All virus can have long term complications on a one a million case. Flu can cause cardiomyopathy it is just super rare.

COVID is the same. VERY VERY VERY rarely it can be serious in children (see MIS-C).

Worrying about your healthy 11 month old having complications from COVID is like worrying about getting hit by a meteor and not going outside due to that fear. Relax, your kiddo will be fine.

Thanks, my kiddos are 17 and 20. I asked for general info to relay to people who have expressed this very concern. My gut was telling me it is rare, but I am a lay person.

Thanks for your time!

Agreed, disease is generally mild in children; however, MIS-C is no joke and have been seeing it more recently especially at the 20-28 day post exposure mark.

I have small kids and the concern level for them is next to zero at this time. Based on all the stats.

11 month old still nursing? Did I read that wrong?

Nope...you didn't. It's not unusually for them to nurse till 1 year old (both her OB and pediatrician recommended up to a year if possible). She currently eats most everything we do, but still nurses at night before bed. We're already transitioning to cows milk to stop nursing completely.

Both of mine nursed until around a year.

This is day 7 since we noticed symptoms and she seems to have almost completely recovered...runny nose and watery eyes are gone. Not as fussy as she was when we noticed the initial symptoms. She still has some congestion but assume that will pass soon.

Good to hear it....

Bad news you're about to start teething so runny nose/fussiness/fever are going to a constant for a bit.

I've had 2 week olds test + and even they do well. It is a very odd virus as common things like HSV 1 and RSV are deadly at that young age.

Isn't the main issue with COVID the immune system over responding? I thought that was what caused the most severe cases.

It seems to be a factor once it gets in the lungs. For some reason kid's immune systems are so strong it just never gets pass the nasopharynx in most cases. It is almost like elderly immune systems are sluggish and just allow it to invade.

? do you have kids? Unless there was an issue better question is why would the baby not be breastfeeding? They will still be eating normal baby food, but two years is normal in many parts of the world that have a far lower IMR

2 kids. Never took it to that level. Maybe 6 months like the pediatrician recommended.

Both kids sharp as a tack and healthy as well.

Glad it works for y'all, two full time careers and daycare at around 7-8 weeks for us.
