Need advice - possible case of COVID

Thanks in advance for the advice, never thought I would have to reach out. It turns out that we sent our kids to High School a couple of weeks ago after being at home since March. On the 12th our son comes home complaining about a weird pain in his stomach gut. We ask if any other symptoms and he says no so we assume its nothing and he goes off to school on the 13th. Mid morning on the 13th he calls and say that he's feeling worst, more stomach pain but nothing else. He sees the nurse and gets sent home. Still no other symptoms and he feels a little better so he goes to school this AM the 14th.

In the meantime our daughter calls this AM and says she doesn't feel right. She complains of stomach ache, fatigue, tiredness up and down the stairs. She went to see the nurse and the nurse sent her home on COVID protocol and says she has to quarantine for 10 days unless she has testing done to show she's not infected.

** The question is if she might have enough symptoms to make a PCR test valid. Would a PCR test come back positive if she's infected. I am guessing it's a no-go for the rapid test. Also, do we get the PCR test for our son as well? I am guessing it makes sense

******* Here's the kicker. I took my 85yo mother to get the COVID vaccine yesterday in the same car we have been transporting my daughter. We wore masks but I am concerned that I could have potentially passed something to mom while we were in the car for 2 hours. I have no real symptoms but my stomach isn't 100%. She has COPD and heart conditions so I would hate the thought of having passed it along to her. Can anyone pass along sound advice. This hits too close to home and its hard to focus right now. Thx.

If it were me, I'd go ahead and get everyone started on Reveille's COVID protocol.

Unfortunately, I would assume and act like everyone has it or is going to get it.... May not, heck no one may even have covid obviously but ....

If anyone has symptoms you can get the PCR test I believe. Although I think have seen where to wait a few days with symptoms for best results. Those who don't should wait until 5-7 days after first exposure or if they get symptoms.

Good luck. I had it back in early December (got tested on day 3) and for what it's worth my family didn't get it. The second I felt bad I holed up in a bedroom until it was over. But I was with them the 2 days prior (Thanksgiving weekend). And still can't tell you how I got it.

Also, my parents got it awhile back. Highest of risks, both over 80 with lung disease, high BP, diabetes, and on and on. My dad was basically asympotomatic and my mom had a relatively mild case. There is a lot of anxiety with this and obviously everyone is different and anything can happen. But remember, the vast, vast majority will have a mild and case and the odds are still way in everyone's favor (obviously some more than others but still).

First, breathe. Whatever happened has happened.

Second, I wouldn't jump straight to COVID in your situation. If your kids haven't been around people since March, immune systems are going to take a hit. Anxiety is likely high as well. If there is no diarrhea, I would side-eye the nurse saying it falls under COVID protocol, but they are trying to be safe.

I would get everyone tested with a PCR test, then go from there. If mom and the daughter only sat in the same car but not together, there is some exposure but not a lot. This virus struggles to live on the surface. I wouldn't even worry her until the tests came back.

This is a great point. They will probably be getting sick pretty regularly for awhile after being sheltered that long.

Yes. At our school which opened in August, pretty much everyone at school got a cold within the first 2 weeks!

Ours did as well. After the first month or so, it seemed to have leveled off.

How did we go from fatigue and upset stomach to having to quarantine for 10 days?
Was their any direct exposure to anyone with a known positive?
If not then you are good. Without fever or direct known exposure I wouldn't worry about it. You only know what you know.

Thx for input folks. Whatever happened has happened with regard to exposure for 85yo mother. There was a slight chance of exposure and there's nothing to be done now. My daughter is home complaining of sore throat, chills, fatigue and stomach ache so something is up. Pediatrician has us scheduled for a PCR test tomorrow morning so I am guessing with those symptoms it will show up as positive if she really has COVID. In the meantime she'll quarantine in her room. Son has no new symptoms so we have that going for us!

The ones you read about are mostly the ones who get sick. Many many more get over a mild case, and you don't hear from them.

All 3 couples who got minimally ill were at a table with an 80 year old major stroke survivor who still has movement issues. She has continued to test negative.

If your daughter has symptoms showing then the test should be conclusive on positive/negative.

I would ask the facility providing the test if they recommend rapid or the PCR.
