Quarantine after close contact after vaccination?

I've looked online for the answer to this question, but am not turning it up very easily. Say a person has been fully vaccinated (received both doses of one of the vaccines) and then has a close contact with someone who later tests positive. Ordinarily, that close contact would require quarantine per CDC guidelines, but after a person has been vaccinated, would they still be required to quarantine? This is just a hypothetical question at this point, but one that I'm sure many people will be dealing with in the coming months.

Based on everything that has come out about post-vaccine life I would plan to still quarantine because we just don't know. They have already said you still have to wear your mask, why would they stop there? Better to play it safe for 2 more weeks than murder everyone you look at.

Right now all I've heard the vaccine does is lower your particular symptoms. They have not determined whether vaccine suppression has limited the virus's ability to keep spreading from vaccinated, low symptomatic individuals to the unvaccinated population. I suspect it'll will take awhile to get enough population vaccinated and very targeted research before they can determine that. So for now, anything you did before you still need to keep doing.

What's the point of the vaccine if you get both doses and can't change your behavior? Not sure anyone under 50 would ever get it if you still need to mask, social distance, and quarantine.

We had this discussion at work today. No definitive answers, but we're hoping that quarantine isn't required after a full vaccine. We don't require it for three months after recovery, so it seems like the same would hold true, but for longer, after the vaccine, doesn't it?

That makes a lot of sense when you put it that way. Just weird that the CDC doesn't have any guidance, at least that I can find.

Based experience with other vaccines over our history we would not expect asymptomatic transmission after a second dose. One exception would be if an escape variant (i.e. mutation) occurs which is vaccine resistant.

I will not quarantine if that happens to me once my vaccine is in full effect.

The 4 people under 50 I personally know who either passed away over the holiday or spent over a week in the hospital would say otherwise.

They would say get fully vaccinated and not change their behavior whatsoever?

CDC has not yet addressed it in guidelines, but that is likely coming as more get vaccinated. I am using common sense. I will still wear a mask and socially distance, but I am not quarantining if I am "exposed". As a physician, I have been "exposed" wearing masks and gloves multiple times (no fancy space suits) prior to being vaccinated and have not had an issue. There is no point to the vaccine if it does not help open up society. If all it does is keep you from getting seriously ill, then that is good enough for me. If this thing were not killing some people we would not be in the hysteria that we live in today. If everyone still "gets" Covid 19 but don't get sick because they were vaccinated then we have accomplished our goal. Eradicating the virus is not a realistic goal.

Why is it weird. There is literally NO DATA. Are they supposed to just issue random guidelines based on hopes and dreams? They do the best they can (IMO) with the data available at the time.

I suspect guidelines will not change until most of the population is vaccinated honestly.

Good to know once you're safe devil be damned to all others. Probably should focus on vaccinating people who will follow the guidance to best help us get through this then.

The vaccine works by creating spike proteins that attach to dead cells. The body then processes those dead cells. If you are in close contact your body will process the virus out just like the dead cells with spike proteins. You should/will never have a transmissible level of virus in your body.

there is literally zero reason to quarantine, wear a mask, or social distance once vaccinated.

Weird is probably the wrong word, but we now have people that are getting the second dose and will find themselves in this situation with no specific guidance. My wife, for instance, gets her second dose next week. If I test positive after she is fully vaccinated, it would be nice to have some guidance from the CDC on whether she should quarantine or not. My inclination would be that she no longer needs to quarantine, but would just like to see some official guidance on it.

To quote Mugatu 'I feel like I'm taking CRAZY PILLS'

What is the point of a vaccine if nothing changes? From the CDC website:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/facts.html

Will a COVID-19 vaccination protect me from getting sick with COVID-19?
Yes. COVID-19 vaccination works by teaching your immune system how to recognize and fight the virus that causes COVID-19, and this protects you from getting sick with COVID-19.
