All,

My parents live in CS. Dad is 72 and had his first Moderna shot 10 days ago. He apparently started having allergy like symptoms about 7 days ago and generally feeling "crummy." He had chills and general aches 4-5 days ago and tested positive today for Covid.

Other than some high-cholesterol that he manages through medication and healthy diet, he's in great health and still works 12-14 hour days as a business owner. I told them to monitor his temperature and oxygen levels as well and his O2 level is 99 as of today and he's had no shortness of breath throughout. No fever other than the chills he experienced 4 days ago and no headaches.

However, I'm still incredibly nervous and wanted to ask a few questions and see if there is anything I could recommend to my parents:

1. Does having the first vaccine shot potentially help reduce the symptoms of Covid?
2. I've read about monoclonal antibodies on here--should he still seek this treatment, even with the vaccine shot?
3. He has a PCP, but if he takes a turn, is there anyone or any facility you would recommend he visit in CS or surrounding area to seek treatment?
4. I recall a timeline mentioned here about the virus progression and days that seem to be the most difficult--can someone please remind me?
5. Also, assuming he's had this for 5-7 days with no difficulty breathing and consistent oxygen levels of 98-99, does that tend to indicate that he won't have difficulty going forward? This is more for my own peace of mind as I'm wondering if those with more severe cases seem to have more warning signs early on than what my dad might be experiencing.

My understanding is monoclonal antibodies would interfere with immune reaction you are trying to elicit from a vaccine.

day 8 seems to be a turning point for a lot of people. It has never been clear to me, though, if those who get worse are sort of bad to begin with, or if the minimal symptom thing flares to bad.

Chances are he will be fine, especially with one shot on board. It might not help much but yes, the shots should work to mitigate symptoms from what I understand. (not a doc)

Clear evidence about the best way to approach this scenario is not to be found in the medical literature but I was literally having nearly this same conversation with a colleague yesterday about a patient.

1. Yes, he should have some partial protection. Severe cases of COVID-19 are generally very uncommon after even one vaccination dose.
2. If he gets the monoclonal antibody therapy he may be instructed to wait a considerable time before completing his vaccination series.
3. The late inflammatory phase of COVID-19 (serious illness) has a typical onset around 10 days from symptoms onset but could be as early as 7 days or as late as 14 days.
4. It's encouraging that he's feeling well so far. Get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, use anti-inflammatory meds or Tylenol for aches & pains, have him move around frequently throughout the day to keep blood circulating.

Here's hoping for a quick and uneventful recovery for your dad!

Agree on all accounts.

Except I'm not sure if the vaccine conferred any advantage in this case. Based on averaged, if your dad felt symptoms 7 days ago, and had the vaccine 10 days ago, he was likely exposed 1-2 days before vaccination. In some cases vaccination after infection helps, such as the case with tetanus, however I'm not sure that's the case with COVID.

If he started having symptoms only 3 days after his first shot he was likely exposed before.
