For those with sinus congestion, what is helping you? Nasal spray seems to be the only thing that opens up my sinuses to allow me to breath through my nose. I've tried steam, Sudafed, allergy meds and not getting much help. No sob and can get full breath through mouth when congestion is too thick.

On day 8 of somewhat mild symptoms. No fever since day 3/4. Light dry cough, no smell/taste and moderate sinus congestion (clear mucus) are what I'm dealing with.

Thanks

I don't have Covid but have constant allergies/chemical sensitivities. I do nasal irrigation with salt water and a baby nasal aspirator. You can also buy saline nose spray that can accomplish a similar result. There are also machines you can buy that do it also.

Mucinex (guaifenesin)? It's an expectorant that can thin and loosen mucus in the airway.

Many thanks to you all. I forgot to list a saline rinse in my original efforts. I have a pulsing saline rinse machine that can push the water through but it's not taking much out with it at this point. Had not tried that with an aspirator though, and was lucky enough to find a new one in the house! Will try that this evening.

Generic guaifenesin hasn't touched this. I'll try it again though.

Alkolol mucus solvent has been ordered for delivery tomorrow.

If anyone has another can't miss idea, I'm open

Double shot of whisky.
Shot of lemon juice.
Shot of honey.
3 slices of pickled sushi ginger.

Put in a glass and microwave for 20 seconds (or until the first bubble).

Stir.

When you put it up to your mouth to take the first sip, the vapors go straight to your soul!

Are you talking about using Afrin or any other over-the-counter decongestant nasal spray? If so, after about three or four days, you are physically addicted to it. All the things mentioned, plus nasal steroids, can help you get off of it, but the congestion will only worsen the longer you use OTC decongestant sprays. Sometimes it takes oral steroids and nasal antihistamine sprays (rx only) to help get off of the decongestant sprays.

Thank you very much for your response. Yes, OTC spray is what I was referring to. Today was day 3 with congestion/spray and wasn't wanting to continue for exactly the reasons you said.

Congestion is actually doing a bit better this evening (have not used spray since this morning). Getting post nasal drip now, so I guess it's moving. Dry cough is about the same (light).
Would you recommend guaifenesin to thin mucus and Sudafed if congestion returns? Anything particular for the dry cough?

If a lot of congestion is the biggest problem, Sudafed or Mucinex D or any decongestant you have to sign for from the pharmacist is best, as long as your blood pressure and heart are OK. If thicker secretions, plain Mucinex (guaifenesin), and if cough then Mucinex DM or any guaifenesin with DM or just straight DM along with a humidifier can help.

I agree with the sign for it at the counter comment above mine. Many who don't have sinus issues normally don't know that sudafed PE is about as effective as cardboard pills. Gotta get the sudafed behind the counter that says psuedoephedrine.

They track it so they know you're not making meth. One of my ENT colleagues, years ago, had a really big meth production facility he was running out of Conyers, GA. He was writing narcotic prescriptions for kids who would sell them and use the money to buy sudafed at big pharmacies. The physician had a stripper girlfriend who connected him to the underworld. I had a patient who was Georgia Bureau of Investigations and another who worked for the DEA who were both working the case and they both said he was doing a really good job of making meth, and making a very significant amount of money. To me, it sounded as if he was the inspiration behind Breaking Bad, who knows. Regardless, he lost his license and went to the Big House for a while. Not entirely sure what happened to the stripper or the juveniles. Drugs are bad, Mmmmkay?

Afrin is pretty effective, but you dont want to use it every days on end because i believe it will cause rebound congestion if overused.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!

Amen. I am convinced Sudafed PE is a placebo, but the pseudoephedrine HCL "real" stuff you have to sign for actually works. You can feel the sinuses sort of relax and I often get a popping or slow bubbling sensation as the snot loosens up and actual pressure differential normalizes. The sprays work too, very fast, but they don't have so much staying power for me.

Keep in mind, the real sudafed will keep you awake, so don't take the 12 hour version in late afternoon

Kool, using Mucinex D can raise blood pressure, correct?

Be very careful with that stuff. My brother got fully addicted to Afrin years ago. It was very hard for him to kick that habit

Honesty what helps me more than anything with normal sinus congestion is Breathe Right nasal strips. Not sure if Corona congestion is any different but worth a try.
