Merck - why not collaborate

Given that Merck recently announced that they are abandoning their vaccine plans due to weak immune response, it would be great if they used their vaccine production capabilities to produce something that has been shown effective. I understand that mRNA vaccines might be a little cutting edge and difficult to produce, but why not collaborate with J&J to significantly boost production of their vaccine? Seems like a no-brainer to me and thus the reason why it won't happen.

I think Merck and some others will jump in eventually. Sanofi is producing vaccine for one of the other majors already. It'll probably take some time to tool up for production though.

I'd guess it doesn't make business sense. Right now is peak vax demand, which will likely fall off rapidly as those who want it get it, and others continue to develop natural immunity.

In one year, selling the vax will be like selling ice to eskimos. Probably not worth the startup costs / opportunity costs to get the line running.

Can I share with you about global warming while you look at my ice cube catalog?

Merck has already been in discussion with J&J to help in producing their approved vaccine candidate. Merck has additional capacity in their vaccine manufacturing lines to produce additional units for J&J.

I see where you are going with this but I don't think this is the case. There are 20+ vaccines still in the works that are in at least in Phase 2 of their trials with the expectation there will be a demand for their product. The world has 7.8 billion people so that a equates to a significant demand. J&J has the ability to reach the masses given it's a single dose and can be kept in a refrigerator instead of exceptionally cold freezers.

Hopefully you have inside info and this turns out to be the case. Let's speed production so we all can enjoy normalcy a little sooner.

Has J&J given any sort of predictions as far as doses by X date? 100M by April or anything like that. Iirc the other two were already starting mass production in the middle of phase 3

Sanofi and some others plan to help. They already have the capabilities to mass produce vaccines.

I think the drug production and the drug companies are not the same thing. Similar to how most semiconductor companies use TSMC/UMC to make their chips. I'm sure they do have some internal factories and things, but the scaled ones are likely external mfg. So one not getting a formula into production isn't the end of the world.

As predicted.
