I have now had COVID and both doses of the vaccine but I still mask at work and in public. At work it is not an option and in stores I am mainly doing it out of respect for the people who work there who don't really have the ability to not interact with the general public.

The people who make an hourly retail employee tell them to put on a mask are just making a choice not to wear a mask and as long as they explain that kindly to the store employee and don't act like an ass, are fine.
FIFY.

Seriously, stop the name calling and honestly IF that were the only real reason to wear a mask, we really coul;d just throw them away now. If you want to wear a mask b/c you feel compelled to do so b/c there is the potential it might limit viral load IF you are indeed infected and just don't know it, fine. Calling people names b/c they choose not going to get more people wearing masks, but will ensure many do not.
Sorry for hurting your feeling but if you enter an establishment that has a mask policy and don't have a mask on you are already past the point of "not acting like an ass".

These people are just doing their jobs and trying to stay safe, they don't care about your choice no matter how "kindly" you explain it.

Masks wearing at the local YMCA here in Dallas has pretty much stopped. The older the people are the less they wear them or have since this all started.

This is a dilemma I have right now. Our state mandates masks in all places and businesses risk huge fines if they don't enforce it. So...I hate masks and want to not comply to gather support for ending these ridiculous mandates...but I also don't feel it is fair to make business owners/employees deal with any repercussions.

And these employees having to "ask" is no skin off their nose. Look, here in Collin County, almost everywhere I go there are plenty of these "asses" not wearing masks. The mandates are just not enforced. No one says anything to them. Maybe where you are it's different. And no doubt certain stores may well enforce a policy more than others. But the customer can still go in and if they don't like being told that they have to wear a mask, they can decide to shop elsewhere. But it's really just not an issue at all here.

I wear a mask. I see the potential benefit of lessening the spread of viral load, to me and to others. But, I am 100% ok with others deciding not to wear them. You are totally free to call them what you want to. But it's their body and they shouldn't be told they have to wear a mask if they choose not to. And in the end, it's not really THAT dangerous if there are those without masks. The employees are still safe unless they spend an extended period of time also unmasked within 6 feet of the customer.

But why name call in the first place. Stop caring about other's business. handle your own and keep doing your thing, as will I. Let the maskless ones do their own thing and put the energy on more meaningful things.

Destination Dallas, a gym in Allen, never enforces it. Saturday it was packed and no one I saw was wearing one. And that's where I draw the line with mask wearing. When I train, I do not wear on either. And yet, there hasn't been a major spreading incident since they reopened back in May. It really says something about the benefits of strength against illnesses. Stronger people just do not get as sick overall. This is a very serious lifters gym. Those who focus on staying healthy, fit AND strong seem to benefit during all of this...If you are fit but not strong, rethink your program.

I am not confronting these maskless people in public, that isn't my place, but it doesn't take a whole lot of energy to observe some "muh freedoms" people causing a scene because a 19 year old working a cash register asks them to follow the policy set by that establishment.

I personally know a couple of people who go out looking for these arguments because they want to virtue signal that they think masks are stupid. Like making the hostess tell you to wear a mask is their Rosa Parks moment or something.

I know those ones too. And ya, if one goes out of their way to try to prove crap to others that are just doing their job for no reason, that is wrong. But, there are quite a lot not wearing them that aren't doing that. Don't lump; all mask wearers into the few annoying people that do that. Most are just choosing not to wear them. And if it is b/c they feel that a government entity shouldn't tell them what to wear and how, it's their choice and they have a point. Don't do it to start a scene. But they should be able to go into the establishment and shop and if they are told the rules say they have to leave, then tell them thank you and shop else where. The fact remains that is a store wants to enforce the mask mandate, they have every right to. But they also need to realize that enforcement will mean that their employees will have to be the ones enforcing. One could argue that the store doesn't have to enforce really. There are plenty of ways around it I've seen and no law enforcement cares. If a store could be fined (unfairly might I add) by the city or county that they are in, just say that. I get it. But if I were a retail owner, I'd tell my employees just not to worry about it. I'd want the customer's money. The risk of that person spreading covid is so minimal b/c that one person doesn't have a mask it is a waist of time to say something plus it's their body. It's not like they strolled in nude (granted, there could be exceptions for that as well, but I digress). But I agree, they don't need to be an ass about it either. They realize that if they do not have a mask they are setting themselves up for questioning.

My approach if I just don't have a mask is usually to inform the first clerk I see that I forgot my mask or I'm out (which I am telling the truth, I occasionally forget them or I have one left and it breaks, etc). They usually tell me not to worry about it or they have a box full and offer me one, which I'll take. And if I am out, I take a few and leave them in my car.

In the end, this topic actually started about social distancing and morphed into mask v no mask. So hope I am not straying this off the topic. The mask debate will never fully conclude until the mandates are gone. Each side by now has established where they stand and that isn't going to change. I just feel name calling and judging by either side leads to nothing at all productive for something so trivial. If someone wants to be the "Rosa Parks" of non masking, let them. Just keep doing you.

Yes and no.

I've always 'social distanced'...I hate close talkers and I hate people standing on my heels in a line...have always done everything I can to avoid it.

In the manner of covidian social distancing, I never started.

I live life normally but I am a pediatric ICU RN and learned a long, long time ago that it is not healthy to live life in fear. Never take a day for granted. If someone wants a hug, I hug them.

Love you for that. That post brightened my day. Thank you.
