Cancel appointment for Second Dose?

I received my first dose of Pfizer a few weeks ago at the VA. My appointment for the second dose is coming up and I'm wondering if I should cancel. Why? I'm in my mid 30's and was the only person under 60 that I could see in the area where they keep patients for 15 minutes post shot.

I currently work from home and got it because my employer was saying they are going to make us come back to the office soon, so I figured since I was eligible I would get the vaccine while the VA was offering it. I live in MI and because the median income here in my county is the highest in the state, we have received next to no vaccines even though we have a relatively high population of elderly. I feel guilty potentially getting that second dose when a lot of people who are at higher risk than I am have not received the first dose. The only people I know who are getting the vaccine are friends and family that are veterans at the VA here. Everyone else is on a waiting list, if they're lucky.

Should I cancel my appointment for the second dose?

Finish the recommended course. The time for this debate was before the first shot.

If you feel super guilty, use your new immunity to go out and stimulate the economy in places where old people don't go.

The vaccines are less effective against the new strains. However this seems to be totally mitigated by the huge immune response you get from the approved regimens. I don't know if the 2nd shot is necessary, but no one really knows if it isn't.

Plus where I am they are holding doses back for the 2nd shot, so people not showing probably just slows everything down anyway.

I think you need to go ahead and get the 2nd shot.

Also, what county in Michigan are you in? I have family up there and wondering about the situation.

Every day I get a few reminders of what a different world some people are living in. Seeing a kid in Washington playing a tuba inside a bubble was today's micro-shock. Still hard to believe how many kids haven't been to school in a solid year.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

Get it and then (once immune) volunteer at a vaccination hub if you're still feeling guilty!

Toss up. I can see where you're coming from. A single dose does seem to be highly effective, but that immunity appears to be enhanced and prolonged by the second shot.

If you knew that your vaccine was goign to go to good use if you didn't get it, then yeah, leave it for someone more needing of it. However the reality is that there's no saying that if you don't get it, some other 30 year old won't.

I suspect with the J&J vaccine approaching approval soon, we'll see thing really improving over the next month.

Get it. The dose is already reserved for you. Plus you can get back to life.

Get it. They are holding it for you and you may as well finish the job. And look at it this way, once you are immune, you are in some way protecting any number of olds that come in contact with you.

Saw several articles on how first dose might be enough and wanted to know what others thought on here. Sorry for asking a question on a forum dedicated to the rona.

That's good to know.

Are there any reliable estimates yet on how long the immunity is expected to last?

I saw an article today about how the second dose might not be very useful for those who have already had covid.

The 1st dose is probably not all that useful for those who have already had covid. We've checked our brains at the door and succumbed to fear porn

While possibly true, there are no clinical trials on that. Everbody should get their 2nd dose.

This is just plain uninformed. Ones who have had Covid may still be at risk of the variants. Those who have had Covid likely will only need one shot which serves as the booster. Essentially, having had Covid acts to your immune system like the first shot and the second boosts it further to fight off the current (and potentially later) variants.

Your comment of checked brain at door is true - you have no knowledge of the subject, use the phrase "probably not all that useful" without supporting evidence (hence, "probably"), and summarize everything as fear porn.

To the original poster, get the second dose. The shot is already reserved and allocated for you to complete the process. While it likely wouldn't go to waste, it may if you don't keep your scheduled vaccination protocol/schedule.

The poster should beg for forgiveness for not citing the UK study or marine study showing a similar rate of infection-reinfection for someone previously infected as a vaccinated individual. Or that the american reinfection death count sits at what, one nursing home patient? Instead of "probably", he should have used "may" with no facts like you just did.
