I was against people who don't fit the categories sliding in to get the shots but have changed my tune. Now that Texas is dropping safety regulations this week I think if you can get it, you should. It's basically become each person for themselves so take care of yourself at this point. As I said, that's a 360 degree change in opinion for me but every action has a reaction.

It's always been everyone for themselves. Also "360 degree change of opinion" made me smile

If anyone knows of someone looking for the vaccine from the E. Houston/Beaumont/Port Arthur area, the CVS website has appointments in Silsbee for Wednesday thru Sunday of next week. Pfizer 2-shot series and you sign up for the second shot at the same time. Obviously would be a longer drive out of Houston but worth it if you can get a family member or friend that needs/wants it signed up.

I usually have to do a 540 degree turn. I change my mind, keep going till back to my original feelings, and then keep going again till I'm sure changing my mind was what I wanted to do.

There are so many variable to take into account to try to prioritize it's ridiculous at this point. Now, I do believe the first rounds needed to go to medical workers, police, food supply chain, elderly who have very high mortality rates, etc. Now, with three vaccines and pretty good availability, it needs to be get shots in arms. I don't know how at this point priority can be made from a) have some CDC conditions but stay pretty isolated and b) pretty healthy but work in a field with lots of person-person contact. The sooner the number of possible hosts for the virus go down, the better things will be (yes, that's what some call herd immunity but I hate that term as most use it incorrectly; kind of like people who use terms like entropy and second law of thermo).

Why are people acting like the pharmacies not asking about eligibility absolves them? You are asked when signing up for the vaccine if you're eligible. If you're not eligible, just because the person putting the shot in your arm doesn't ask about your eligibility it doesn't change the fact if someone lied to get the appointment.

Now I have a lot of opinions about the eligibility groups and the fact that 90% of the people in Texas seem to be eligible is not very efficient or targeted. Nonetheless, If you're in the 10% that isn't eligible (like myself) and lie to get an appointment, do you really think it's ok? There are still people in the first group that are waiting to get the vaccine. My 90 year old grandmother who is on oxygen and has heart failure is finally getting her first shot tomorrow. She would have been much higher on the list if people hadn't lied about eligibility.

I'm not the COVID police, but it's baffling me that people are saying do whatever you can to get a shot in your arm. If shot's are going to waste, it isn't because of lack of appointments in urban areas at this point.

Your grandmother has always been at 1b, 1a if she lives in a long term care facility. Her getting an appointment this late is not a result of other people lying.

Exactly. And as long as she is signed up now, no one signing up on the same list at this point is jumping ahead of her. People have had 2 months to figure this **** out and get on a list. They should just open it fully at this point. A non-1a1b person deciding to sign up now is very different than those that did it in January. Otherwise, how long does the non-1a1b world have to wait for someone or their family/caretakers to figure out how to use the internet or make a phone call? That could be a long wait
jamotoe1

She signed up in January and is not in a long term facility.

There is no guarantee the next group is everyone else. If someone is lying, they cann rationalize it however they want to. I personally think it's cheating and they can think it's right. I'm not the police or turning anyone in, but that's my opinion.
Enrico Pallazzo

So no one signing up now is jumping her in the line(s) you chose. Debating this in January is a much different argument vs debating it now when some 1a1b have had 2+ months to sign up and haven't. I don't think people should have been doing it in January, but how long is the rest of the world expected to wait for people that have had 2+ months to sign up and have done nothing?

I volunteer at a covid vaccine site and believe me I have heard every excuse in the book from 20 year olds who think they deserve a shot.

That being said, if you meet the criteria with an underlying condition, by all means sign up and help society get shots in the arms that need them.

My son got his vaccine in the first waves due to his work. His wife and my granddaughter are young and healthy and don't fit any of the criteria (they don't live in Texas) so have been waiting. She found out talking to friends and colleagues that essentially they were the only ones not yet getting it. She didn't want to jump the line but did call around. She found a pharmacy yesterday that said just come on down. They had way more vaccine than people with appointments. She was saying she felt bad but I said vaccine sitting on a shelf does no good. I think it's a case of distribution where they don't have the vaccine in the right places. Again, not Texas and they are pretty rural. I think rural America has more doses per capita right now - just my guess.

I am sorry about your grandmother, but I don't think that statement is true. 90 year olds have always been on the top of the list. She has been on page 1 from the beginning.

This statement is not directed at you by the way- My wife has scheduled vaccinations for several relatives, from mid 30s to 80s on Wal Marts website. It is not that hard, at least not in Bell, Tarrant, Fayette, or whatever county in East Texas her sister lives in. Just takes a little effort at this point.

I have a good friend in his early 30s who has a very serious hereditary heart condition. Dude is in great shape and takes care of himself but one day his heart will get him. Anyway my wife had him an appointment in an hour.

There are literally 1500 ways to get an appointment right now. I get that the elderly aren't computer savvy, but they most certainly know someone who is. There is a facebook group dedicated to get elderly appointments.

Agree 100%.

The vaccine distribution is a government run system that they have never rolled out like this before, so there are a tremendous amount of holes. If you can get the vaccine and want it then go ahead. Waiting for "all the elderly" to get it at this point is not a moral point anyone should live on, there are too many ways around the system and too many others are getting it, which at the end of the day is fine, because we want shots in arms.

I did what others on this thread have done. I put my name on a few (maybe 3) waiting lists a month ago. I got an email late last week about receiving the vaccine but it was very specific to date and time and if I couldn't do it then I would have to wait. So I took advantage of the opportunity. I know several people that aren't in the 1a/1b categories that were contacted within the last week by a provider to get the vaccine.

I got my shots in February. At both my first and second appointments, the majority of folks waiting in line with me looked to be in their 40s or younger. I could count the number of "elderly" on one hand.

The state and many of the providers themselves left enough leeway in the rules and sign-up procedures to allow people who really were motivated to get a shot to do so. Heck, the 30 BMI was a big loophole. I'm okay with that. We needed to get the ball rolling.

I did the same. I went and got vaccinated with the first service that gave me an appointment. The other two keep bugging me

I mean, one of the qualifying factors is being a smoker. So if you really want to follow the rules and get the vaccine as soon as possible, I guess go smoke a cigarette first.

When these waiting lists opened they would always say I didn't meet the current criteria but they will get to me when it's available. I'm thinking with all the ramp up in supply, several places just need to get vaccines out because they are getting too much to keep on hand.

Yep pretty sure they are getting vaccine allocations based on how quickly they are able to give out shots. So they are going to do whatever possible to get as many people in to get the shot. At this point they just need to open it up to everyone who wants one so people don't have to smoke a cigarette first to make sure they check one of the qualification boxes.
