Why are you seeking a shot with 65% efficacy vs 95% ? I'm just curious not judging.

Not answering for the op but the people I know that are seeking out the J&J shot are doing it for one of 2 reasons.
1) most are under the misunderstanding that the j&j vaccine is an attenuated vaccine when it is actually a viral vector vaccine. They don't understand that a viral vector vaccine only differs from an mRNA vaccine by how it crossed the cell membrane.

2) logistics/ease/timing since it is a single shot.

It's 100% effective in preventing death, and most studies are saying the efficacy goes up over 90% within a month or so to preventing infection altogether. So it gets stronger over time.

It was also tested against in an area with a different/newer variant than others. So not directly comparable, either.

It's highly, highly misleading to claim it's less effective.

I didn't address the efficacy aspect but this is my understanding as well.

I agree with the guidance of "which shot should you get? The one you are offered"

Whenever I decide to breakdown and get vaccinated, I'll likely pick whichever one has the least side effects and is easiest (one dose). Whenever policy at work rewards it, I'll do it for that and efficacy isn't much of a concern since I'm not at risk.

For me it is 1 shot vs. 2. Fewer side effects. I'm low risk so not worried about reduced effectiveness.

Also my mom had really bad side effects to the mRNA vaccine. Oddly my sister whooped COVID like it was a minor cold.

So just going on genetic family experience it seems like the 2 shot vaccines may be worse for me than the actual virus.

So, back on track...

Anyone have an answer for the OP? I'm also curious where it is available

Every pharmacy and vaccine drive in Wharton county has been almost exclusively JnJ.

They only give the 2 shot stuff when they run out.

What we've learned is if you are younger, you will have side effects. And they can be brutal. If I didn't travel extensively for work and only stayed local 90% of the time. I would take my chances without.

I find this question a bit concerning from a doctor.

As I mentioned the process is a joke. Should be no one who wants a vaccine to be waiting.

I don't get why people are surprised that I think a higher efficacy vaccine should be preferred. Especially in low risk population where it is not as a big a rush to get vaccinated. If you really want to put a stop to COVID you need a vaccine that prevents the infection and not just death.

I will be shocked if the JJ vaccine has any significant duration of protection as well. Single dose vaccines never do.

Big Lake, TX, with a population of less than 3,000 had 300 j&j vaccines on Saturday

This phase crap needs to end. 48 years and 9 months old, 49 year old wife got it at MD Anderson, but I'm not eligible. Yeah, sure, I can lie, drive all over the state, spend all day on the vaccine finder website...but at this point people should be able to show up at a tent with an ID and get stuck. We manage to collect 100 million votes in a single day. If there's no shortage of vaccine, we need to have a national vaccination day or at least a state day. Government needs to quit pouring wet concrete on everything.

I'll add to that, it was open to all over 18 and their actual population is less than 3000 plus they initially were given 200 and an extra 100 was shipped. My question is, what logic or priority is given??

El Campo has a drive through vaccine clinic on Thursday. Anyone 50 or over or any adult that has at least one of a bazillion conditions. Just go there and get one. El Campo Civic Center, 7 to 7.

One of the conditions is smoking, so have a quarter of a cig tomorrow and you won't even be lying when you say you've smoked recently.

So you want to put a stop to this this pandemic, but you're encouraging people not to "rush" and take the first available vaccine because it's not quite as effective as the the others?

That doesn't make a ton of sense to me and seems to go against pretty much everything I've read.

I can only speak for myself, but getting one shot that has a nearly 100% chance of keeping me out of the hospital sounds like the right play.

I'm saying for my family and patients I suggest they wait unless high risk. For population health it makes sense to vaccinate as many as possible.

I just think the JJ vaccine will have poor long term immunity based on every other new vaccine in the last 25 years requiring > 1 dose.

My suspicion is that getting a larger % of the population vaccinated via all approved options will be more material than the supposed long term efficacy of each option.

Odds are that due to hesitancy and how long it is going to take to vaccinate the rest of the world, this is going to be like the flu with annual shots for high risk individuals that target the predicted dominate strain each year.

So unless the difference in durability between the 1 and 2 shots is 12 months vs 12 weeks, I don't think it matters

Fat chance anyone is getting any of these vaccines on an annual basis. Or on any type of multi year schedule.

No way in hell am I doing the vaccine on a regular basis with the side effects you go through. I'll take my chances with Covid at that point.

I seriously doubt this will be the case with mRNA vaccines but only time will tell.

Curious why you say that. The current mRNA vaccines encode for a single spike protein. The only thing that the mRNA vaccines do is shift the location of antibody stimulating proteins from a single large bioreactor in a factory to 10,000s of tiny bioreactors in your body.

KidDoc

Mostly due to the fact that there has not been a single dose vaccine with any long term efficacy in the last 20 years. Our immune system really seems to need that 2nd exposure.

So it is not the mRNA tech that I think favors long term immunity, but the 2 exposures.
