Took some of my family to Escalantes by Second Baptist this afternoon and sat inside. Young family rolled up a little later, masked up and proceeded to wipe the outside table they occupied down with a Clorox wipe.

Wiped all their silverware down. Kept their masks hanging down at their chins.

These people have been permanently damaged. They are raising kids who will have no immunity based upon their exposure as young kids.

Man, that's some fearsome living. I pity them. This cannot go on is my point. The long term effects are so negative.

Shame on the CDC and the those who refuse to push boundaries to move forward. Really terrible.

The official narrative is that we can lighten up on sanitizing surfaces but a lot of people don't want to.

I saw people doing this well before Covid times. Lots of people carried disposable placemats with them, freaked out every time their kids touched a doorknob, sanitized all the surfaces, sanitized all the skin. This really isn't necessarily a Covid thing. But blame away if it makes you happy.

Definitely more hyper sensitive parents these days but you're kidding yourself if you don't believe Covid and the messaging hasn't unnecessarily created even more hysteria. Yeah, I will indeed "blame away," but it's doesn't make me happy.

I'm sad our world is changed for the worse when it comes to socialization and freedoms. You can bury your head in the sand if you don't think Covid and the subsequent (and continued) irresponsible behavior by officials isn't a problem. If it makes you happy, that is.

Good grief. There were plenty of germaphobes before Covid. You have no idea what kind of people they were two years ago.
You do you and talk crap about people you don't know. Hopefully that relieves some of your sadness.

Yes, it is a Covid thing. When you have Biden sitting in a room by himself, the only person wearing a mask after he's been fully vaccinated, on a Zoom call with a hundred other world leaders not wearing masks. They are begging people to get vaccinated but display a sorry show of confidence in the vaccine by wearing a mask. If you don't think they are trying to scare people by prolonging this thing then I don't know what to tell you. I highly doubt you saw "Lots" of people freaking out like you described before Covid.

Some people will wear masks from now onnot really a big deal, and there is NOTHING you can do about it! You don't need to pity them; they should have a right to even if your think it is stupid beyond comprehension!

They should be free to do whatever they want to do. Just like me and my family should be able to do.

You are correct. There were some people.

Now there are alot. And its absolutely a covid thing.

Observations dont necessarily require sentiments

Reminds me of the time I was in first class headed to Vegas. Lady from Houston in front of us was bragging about going to see her plastic surgeon. She promptly pulled out Clorox wipes and wiped down her whole seating area. Then she took off her shoes and opted to stretch out, bare feet and all in the front row. She put her feet up on the damn front wall of the cabin. She was a damn trip.

COVID just exasperated this behavior

You folks sure do care a lot about what others do. I think I might start wiping random stuff down to trigger some of you.

Others care about what I do, also, especially when I don't wear a mask or some crap like that. It goes both ways. I don't know if you are someone who cares about getting back to the way it was or not. If you are good with our current, and new, cultural norms when we are out in public then continue to ignore what's going on around you. I am not like that - I detest where we are and the politics of it.

If you are like me and feel where we are has affected a lot of people in a negative way, you might see my post has nothing to do with shaming others. It's not like I went up to this family and lectured them. Identifying what the challenges are moving forward isn't getting triggered.

There are hundreds of different traits and quirks you and your family have due to outside influences impacting how you grew up. This is no different.

It shouldn't be shocking to people that a global pandemic may change the actions of certain people/families for the long-term. Thinking you can just "convince" them to relax is akin to thinking you can just tell people who lived through the great depression "hey, you don't have to save that much money - live a little!".

Saying they are "permanently damaged" or that you pity them is more a reflection on you than it is them.

Fair enough. I do feel for those who struggle to "normalize" as we move towards this thing having less impact on our lives. Some will never get over it and that's unfortunate.

I was at a Utah Jazz game last week and they sanitized the rim and backboard at halftime...seemed a wee bit strange. I was also told to put my mask on between sips of my drink. Felt all a little over the top.

Not really; I didn't have expectations one way or the other. Seems there are plenty here who don't disagree with my opinion.

Covid and the fear and isolation that followed will have effects on many in our society for quite some time.

I am fully vaccinated and don't wear a mask unless required, but I still have a shot of hesitation when I see a large crowd. Just something I have to push myself through. Others will be the same on different aspects of the pandemic weariness.

I have a genuine question as a first time parent. My baby tries to put everything in her mouth, including whatever table she's sat at, whatever high chair she's in. Should we not care to wipe those surfaces down? Not being condescending at all, I am actually curious.

I think your post is rightly viewed as confirmation bias.

"The tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms or supports one's prior beliefs or values.[1] People display this bias when they select information that supports their views, ignoring contrary information, or when they interpret ambiguous evidence as supporting their existing attitudes. The effect is strongest for desired outcomes, for emotionally charged issues, and for deeply entrenched beliefs. Confirmation bias cannot be eliminated entirely, but it can be managed, for example, by education and training in critical thinking skills."

You are worked up about masks and the government the moment you walk out the front door in the mornings. Because of that you seize on anything that will confirm your inner feelings. Rather than think through the pretty large list of valid concerns that might motivate a parent of a new child, you go right to the CDC being the culprit, having permanently damaged these parents who in turn are ruining their child's immune system.

My 4 year old licked the parmesan cheese shaker when we went out to eat two weeks ago. That was hilarious. It was so hard not to laugh out loud as my wife was scolding her.

We're not a mask wearing family but we wash our hands frequently and wipe down tables and high chairs at restaurants before our kids sit down. We've been doing that since before covid. I realize it's a little futile but my wife is more of a clean freak than anything and it's not so much about protecting from viruses as it is just maintaining a high standard of hygiene and cleanliness.

No you shouldn't worry. All kids do this and that is how an immune system is built.
My son's pediatrician laughs a bit at this. He has noted we spent a century trying to wipe out the germs that lead to disease and now, in this new political environment, we suddenly need to reverse course and conclude that germs are good for us.

I think the best advice is to talk to a doctor and not posters on TexAgs regarding your baby's health.

It's not really up for debate at all that much of the West, especially the USA, has become so obsessed with germs that we've over-sterilized everything leading to much weaker immune systems and more allergies with more severe reactions.

I'm not saying you should let your kid lick the floor at the movie theater but boiling a pacifier that hit the ground for a millisecond is a bit much. Same for bathing your kids in sanitizer non-stop.

I've also seen reports of studies that homes with pets, specifically dogs and cats (or animals which shed and produce dander) have kids with fewer allergies and stronger immune systems.

Worry about pathogenic germs not benign environmental germs. Kids, especially toddlers, are supposed to get sick. It decreases later school absence and decreases the risk of asthma.

Please keep toddlers away from chicken poop. We see far too many cases of salmonella due to back yard chickens.

Try not to share drinks or utensils outside of closed family and even then not a great idea. Common outdoor and pet germs are very safe for the vast majority of children.
