Mom attends a family gathering last weekend. Sunday starts not feeling so great. Monday goes to the ER, wants a COVID test.

"Are you vaccinated?"

"Yes."

"We don't test anyone that's been vaccinated."

Has to line up an appointment with her primary the following day. Goes in, gets tested. Positive.

I'm furious.

Don't go to the ER if you're vaccinated

Sorry to hear that though

Why did she go to the ER for a COVID test? That is risky for health and much more expensive. Pretty much every pharmacy and urgent care around is providing Covid testing.

Pretty sure it's only because she lives in a small town and it's the only place she could get a test after dark.

Why get tested at all? I don't understand the need for testing, especially when you are vaccinated.

this is akin to getting a test for the flu in my opinion which i have never done (for myself or kids) unless we had to take them (kids) in to the doctor for symptom management and the doc just wanted to confirm

if you think you are sick / feel sick....stay home and rest. try to limit interaction with family when possible.

if you are so sick and symptoms become severe and you cannot take care of yourself / manage...go to the doctor and they can determine any tests deemed necessary.

I feel like you, as an unvaccinated person, would change your tone if you were around a vaccinated person who was positive and got you sick if you end up having symptoms. Even if its mild, losing taste and smell SUCKS.

Cases are up ~200% in the past 14 days. We're clearly knee deep in a fifth wave. I predicted back in May / June that there would be no more waves seeing how vaccinations were trending. Clearly I was wrong.

Without testing we have no clue as to the makeup of this wave. 10% vaccinated? 50% vaccinated? 90% vaccinated? I for one am genuinely curious to know what the profile looks like.

Don't go to the ER for a COVID test, you will have a bad time.

There are numerous free and inexpensive alternatives. The ER is for emergencies.

If they are having symptoms (hence the desire for the COVID test)....COVID or not....they should not be out in public. That is standard practice for the flu, cold, etc....

So people are testing now to provide information to the CDC and other organizations?

Do we need to run the gambit of tests every time we feel "icky" to just be sure and provide information to CDC and other health organizations?

Nah. It was my choice to not get vaccinated. I could not care less that people are living their life as normal.

I was thinking more for close interactions, but I guess its a fair point regardless.

To be fair you do have a "right" to be annoyed if someone is actively sick w/ symptoms and hanging around you at work, church, etc. While its not a crime it is common decency. That has not changed.

You're 70. In a small town. After dark. And you start having trouble breathing.

I'll tell her next time just sleep it off and hope for the best.

Apologies for starting this thread and wasting everyone's time.

You went from "not feeling so great" to "having trouble breathing" in this thread.

Sounds like you may have inherited some of her flair for the dramatics.

Hope your mom gets to feeling better soon.

A friend's fully vaccinated elderly father has Covid and yesterday, after passing out and convulsing, he had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital where his O2 levels were low. After a night on oxygen he is better this morning. No idea how long they will keep him in the hospital. These are outlyers, but it still can be serious for the elderly.

Not trying to be dramatic here. But seriously having a hard time understanding responses to this thread. So let's start over.

Your vaccinated 70 year old parent attends a family gathering. The next evening they start not feeling well and having difficulty breathing. It's getting late and they're getting concerned. They live in a small town where an ER is the only thing open.

What's the appropriate thing to do? From what I'm reading above it's (a) do not go to the ER and (b) certainly do not get a COVID test.

Yes, you're being dramatic.

Focus on helping your mom get better.

And yes, I have parents in their 70's that live in a small enough town to not even have an ER, so I can relate.

if they were having trouble breathing...then an ER visit is fine, but honestly, who cares what tests they run as long as they treat the symptoms and get them under control.

If she had symptoms serious enough for the ER, I would expect them to admit her.

That issue and the Covid test seem separate to me.

Difficulty breathing is a good reason to go to the ER.

Separately, as part of her workup they should've done a COVID-19 assay. No one is avoiding tests in vaccinated patients. My guess is something got lost in translation somewhere.

They did a chest x-ray. She's a retired nurse. I'm certain nothing was lost in translation. They literally told her "we do not COVID test if vaccinated".

That stance is going to wind up getting someone killed. There are protocols that if enacted in the very early stages of COVID are highly effective. But it's impossible to pull the trigger on those if you refuse to test.

So you believe the only people who belong in an ER are ones who end up getting admitted?

Is she getting a test on her own? If she has it, she should qualify for the IV antibody treatment.

Not following you here. Symptoms dictate testing, yeah?

Admission or not, how do they not COVID test when you show up with textbook symptoms and you're in a high risk demographic? Seems like they're giving the finger to the vaxxer crowd instead of being medically responsible.

Tested positive yesterday, getting the treatment today. And I'm furious because we could be 24 hours ahead of this thing if an ER doc had done his job.

I'm seriously contemplating a call to whoever runs the ER. My guess is the doc is simply doing what he's been instructed to do. And like I said it's going to wind up getting someone killed.

The ER treats those who are having an emergency. If your mom wasn't on death's door and struggling to breathe, I can see why they would have turned her away.

I'm sorry that she got it.
