Your first post was pretty vague.

Wasn't clear how severe her symptoms were or if they even allowed her to be seen.

I'm hoping something is lost in translation with this story because if the ER's position is that they won't test vaccinated people for Covid even if those people are presenting with symptoms that seems to be pretty reckless. What if your moms Oxygen levels were low enough to warrant admission into hospital? Would they have admitted her without testing for Covid and let her have a bed amongst the non-Covid patients?

Is she getting a test on her own? If she has it, she should qualify for the IV antibody treatment.

Tested positive yesterday, getting the treatment today. And I'm furious because we could be 24 hours ahead of this thing if an ER doc had done his job.

I'm really sorry. Inexcusable.

Finally. Someone gets the entire point of this thread. God bless you child. Blue star for your troubles.

I also think it depends. Did she go in for just a test or did she go in saying she was sick and got herself triaged?

She went in with COVID symptoms expecting a COVID test. Instead she was refused a test, given a chest x-ray (which I'm assuming they would not have done without triaging), clean bill of health, and told to go home and rest.

Sounds like she was triaged, seen, evaluated by a medical provider, and determined to be stable for discharge. That medical provider probably thought a COVID test would not have changed how they managed your mom. Seeing as how ERs are for emergencies, and not a 24/7 convenience store, they probably decided she can follow up with her primary doctor if she needed a test. Or maybe the small town hospital was low on testing supplies and saving them for patients where their treatment would change based on test result.

The job of an ER isn't to always figure out what's wrong, it's to make sure nothing really bad is going on. Treat the bad stuff, let the primary care doc take care of the rest. It is the most expensive form of healthcare, and should be reserved for emergencies.

While all this is true, I don't understand how his mom's vaccination status factored in to the decision whatsoever. I don't necessarily have an issue with the ER not testing (and referring her to Primary Care doc or other testing site), but what seems strange is that they evidently made the decision not to test based on her being vaccinated. That's what doesn't seem wise (if that is really their position).

It is too bad she didn't get the test because the thread about why it was so expensive would have been much more fun.

if they were having trouble breathing...then an ER visit is fine, but honestly, who cares what tests they run as long as they treat the symptoms and get them under control.

This. If you can't breath you go to the ER and tell them that. You don't go asking for a covid test.

She wasn't feeling well and was having trouble breathing. They checked her O2, did a chest x-ray, and sent her home. Zero symptoms treated.

Found out today non-testing for vaccinated was the doc's call, not ER policy. Others we know have gone to the same ER, been tested, and administered antibody infusion all in less than an hour.

Mom attends a family gathering last weekend. Sunday starts not feeling so great. Monday goes to the ER, wants a COVID test.

"Are you vaccinated?"

"Yes."

"We don't test anyone that's been vaccinated."

Has to line up an appointment with her primary the following day. Goes in, gets tested. Positive.

I'm furious.

Why get tested at all? I don't understand the need for testing, especially when you are vaccinated.
Cases are up ~200% in the past 14 days. We're clearly knee deep in a fifth wave. I predicted back in May / June that there would be no more waves seeing how vaccinations were trending. Clearly I was wrong.

Without testing we have no clue as to the makeup of this wave. 10% vaccinated? 50% vaccinated? 90% vaccinated? I for one am genuinely curious to know what the profile looks like.

At least half of the people whom I've know to have test positive for covid in the last month have indeed already had the vaccine. I'm curious the stats as well

The vaccine does not necessarily prevent one from getting COVID in all cases or am I missing something in your comment (ie. you just want the stats of positives who have been vaccinated).

You must not have read the rest of the thread. When a 70 year old is having trouble breathing at night does that not fit the bill?

I'm sorry your mom got it. But not surprised at all that they discharged her if she had a clear CXR and wasn't hypoxic. A COVID test wasn't gonna acutely change any of the ER management. Living in a small town I bet resources and beds are minimal. I'm sure more factors are considered than just "we don't test vaccinated patients." And she may have had some shortness of breath but it sounds like she was still stable for discharge.

Especially if you are the gov pushing the vaccine to "everyone". Last thing you need is records of positive cases in vaccinated folks screwing up the numbers for big pharma.

Why did she go to the ER for a COVID test? That is risky for health and much more expensive. Pretty much every pharmacy and urgent care around is providing Covid testing.
You're more likely to get COVID hanging around the ER.

Plenty of non-contact testing around.

Lol i was in on it first, but I think everyone needs to realize there was a clarification later going from not feeling well to trouble breathing.

Also, small towns there are not as many options for urgent care etc so it's either wait for your primary to be in office or ER.

Also, I can definitely appreciate anyone having the desire to know if they have COVID or cold/flu. That diagnosis would maybe Cause one to monitor pulse oxygen and other symptoms more carefully.

Feel like this thread has run it's course.

OP hope your mom is doing ok. Please let us know.

this is akin to getting a test for the flu in my opinion which i have never done (for myself or kids) unless we had to take them (kids) in to the doctor for symptom management and the doc just wanted to confirm

Only reason you get kids tested for the flu is for the Drs note missing a week of school is much easier when you have a note
