Welcome to the SEC Vanderbilt Commodores. For those just tuning to volleyball season, Vanderbilt has upstarted its volleyball program after not having one for over 40 years. They have recruited a couple classes and brought in some solid transfers. They are led by coach Anders Nelson, a longtime assistant at Kentucky. We can be welcoming and hospitable pre match, but after that first serve let's show them what the SEC is all about.
Despite resurrecting their program, they played an honest non conference schedule. They played 4 power 4 schools. They took Kansas to 5 sets and fell, they traveled to Cali and lost to Cal in 5 sets. They lost to Illinois in 4sets and got swept by Minnesota. They have wins against Belmont, Lipscomb, Western Kentucky, and UC Irvine. They played in one conference game as well last night and fell to tu 25-13, 25-18, 25-21 (with tu's setter out).
Their roster is composed of 11 freshman and redshirt freshman and 6 transfers. They are led by former Ivy League player of the year in Kamryn Chaney who they set way more than anyone else at the OH position. She is also an excellent excellent server with a crazy top spin. They can go on runs with her back there. We'll need to get some good first touches on her serves or hope that she has more service errors. As a whole Vanderbilt has a lot of service errors. They also have a very weak block. Ifenna averages more blocks per set than their entire team lol. So if we can pass great we should be able to score easily.
We'll need to keep Chaney in check. They like to play fast. I want to see us have a more consistent block throughout the match and each set. If we can start with a strong serve, then we can easily dominate this match and not let them even touch 20. Our serving looked pretty good against Mizzou. Waak and Cos-Okpalla both had multiple aces. If a team like us could have multiple people collect aces every match then we will be extremely hard to beat.
We saw Kyndal Stowers have an excellent match yesterday. She had some great sharp angles on some swings. We didn't set our middles as much as I would have liked. Mizzou really keyed in on Lednicky. Hellmuth didn't have that strong of a match offensively either, yet we still won comfortably. We have yet to play a match where we have multiple people have an unstoppable match. The potential is through the roof and I'm excited to see us get better ana better throughout conference play. We just can't let up against lower competition. We need to stay consistently aggressive and try to get out of matches in 3.
One conference match down, 14 to go! Winning 11+ should put us in a great position to host post season. Picking up a win against Missouri was important. They were one of 6 SEC teams ranked along with tu, Kentucky, Florida, Tennessee and us. The conference race will be tough, but extremely fun to follow. Let's take care of business and get to 2-0… BTHO vandy.
