Last time out… well we all know what happened. WE BTFHO tu
Now we turn our attention to Volunteers of Tennessee. They are one of the better teams in the SEC with a 7-3 conference record. Their only losses have been 5 setters to tu and Florida, before dropping one on Friday to Mizzou. So we'll get one team riding the highest of highs after an emotional win and another team desperately trying to bounce back.
Can we sustain the momentum. Last year we struggled in the games after an emotional road win against tu. This is where we need to lean on our experience and maturity. Tennessee doesn't have a huge home environment thankfully, but we know they will come out swinging.
They have one of the best setters in the country in Carolina Kerr and one of the best hitters in Hayden Kubik. However outside of that they have been weak. They've been inconsistent on starting other hitters. They've been shuffling their starting lineup and rotations a lot. But at the end of the day they'll lean on Kubik. Helping them through these problems is Libero Gulce Gutketin. She last played for Wisconsin in the sweet 16 and aside from being a Libero there, she was serving really tough. That's another of Tennessee's strength, although in conference play it's dwindled down a bit.
We handed tu their first loss of the season and we didn't need Lednicky to swing 50 times. Stowers and Cos-Okpalla stole the show. That's what's different about this years team. Having an outside like Stowers can really help us when teams are stifling Lednicky. I'd like to see us continue to give Cos-Okpalla and Morgan Perkins more swings. It's pick your poison against us and I'm excited to see how our offense fares tomorrow.
What really shines through was our defense. Lednicky had 17 dogs and Stowers put in a clinic in defense as well. We had 14 blocks as well. Our block carried us through the end of last season and hopefully it's just getting started!
We're 10-1 in conference. 2 hours before we start will be Kentucky and Texas. A Texas win there and there will be a tie for first including us. However, we hold the tiebreaker for 2nd should Kentucky win. But we must take care of our own business. We only have 4 games left in conference. A win here would also be huge in securing a double bye top 4 seed in the conference tournament. We also need to keep winning so we can fight to get a 3 seed in the ncaa tournament! A lot on the line, a lot of noise, a lot of momentum, a lot of emotion, like Jamie says, we need to remember to breathe. Let's BTHO ut…
