I think it was the fourth set, Ags seemingly won the point but something happened and the point was replayed as if it hadn't happened. What was that all about?

Thanks in advance for helping an olds learn about a clearly exciting sport!

Up judge called a back row attack on Nebraska but he was wrong so they replayed the point. Sucked because it was a free ball coming our way and we were in great position to take the point.

R1 (up ref) called a double contact on Nebraska

While clearly a double it was the first contact by Nebraska which is allowed regardless of where it is sent

slightly incorrect called a double being sent over not a back row attack

I didn't have the sound on so that's how I interpreted what I saw... Same bad result though. We were in good position to score.

You can double on the first contact and send it over. You can double on the second contact, as long as it isn't an attack(aka setter dump). You cannot double on the third contact

Thanks TulaneAg and others for your informed inputs. Clearly I have much more to learn about collegiate volleyball. Hopefully two more Aggie wins this season to learn more THIS year. It appears I will be watching a LOT more Aggie VB going forward into future seasons. Very exciting to watch and very impressive athletes. Super impressed with our Coach in his post game comments after each tournament game finished.

I was watching a high-school game a couple years ago. It was a state championship game so not just some scrubs. It seemed like a double touch was called on at least one out of every three set attempts. I'm glad to see the rules were changed so that inconsequential things don't cause a stoppage of play and ruin scoring chances.

the rule changed last year at the college level and this year at the HS level. multiple contacts are allowed on first and second contact to a team mate. If the ball has crossed the plane a violation is charged if it is the 2nd contact, hence the replay in our match yesterday.

It has avoided some dubious ball handling calls for the most part and keeps play from being interrupted.

And now you don't have all the loud volleyball parents yelling "DOUBLE" every time the opposing setter touches the ball.

Starts in club this year along with other rules to help the game as well

AAU Championships last year used the college rule in the 2025 AAU Championships and it was well received

add in the no hands above head rule for club and we are becoming more amd more let them play mentality

Or the adjustment period of every match figuring out if this ref has a sensitive eye for doubles.. only to find out they stop calling them midway.. then call 1 more at match point.

Doubles were to subjective from 1 ref to the next.

I like this idea, this thread can be a thread for anyone who has all sorts of questions about volleyball, at all levels! No dumb questions, ask about rules, recruiting, playing, coaching!

I believe several of us officiate. Several others are USAV dad's, and others just enjoy yelling at clouds.

that would have been me way back when. Had an official turn around from the stand and suggest I attend an officials mtg. since I "knew" so much. lol

as a "USAV dad", I've seen some crazy stuff over the years, some of which involved yours truly.

For most of my "USAV Dad" career, i was designated cameraman for my daughter's team, so i had to keep my mouth shut.

I just took a 20 min work break and played Q and A with Gemini AI. Much VB ignorance cured! (and hopefully retained through end of the week.

What do you mean, that's the simplest terms of the rules for a non volleyball newbie to understand

I've always been annoyed by the graphics shown in every televised volleyball game that shows basic rules like win 3 out of 5 sets. Challenge rules, etc... That's akin to watching a football game telling us there are 4 15min quarters split into two halves.

But after seeing all the newbies whose attentions have been turned towards our amazing team, yeah those graphics are necessary for the time being. How many didn't even know that it's been rally scoring for MANY years now. Also that the 5th set only goes to 15 points. HAHAH

I did that the other day. Specifically about the rotations and subbing rules.

an example is the double hit rule.
first contact can be multiple contacts on an attempt to play the ball- off one part of the body to another ( including hands) that ball is a
legal hit whether it stays on the receiving teams side or crosses the plane of the net back to the opponent.

if a double contact takes place on a teams 2nd hit, it is legal provided the ball remains on the side of said team.

if a double contact occurs on the 2nd or 3rd contact and crosses the net, it is an illegal hit.

Nuances- center line violations, net infractions, in the net, over the net, backrow attacks and blocks

Any recommendations for a good YouTube video explaining rules and player positions?

Are the rules different for Olympic volleyball?

The rules are fairly simple so I'm sure there's a good video out there. Olympic volleyball plays using international rules but I don't know if they are all that different. I think one of the big ones are the number of substitutions you can have per set. International has a lot less (I don't know the numbers) so players have to be more well rounded and not one-trick in order to stay in the rotation longer. Probably some libero rule differences.

Player positions are pretty much as you learned it in school as you have 6 players and you rotate around. They have to be in their position at the start of the point but can move around afterwards. The one caveat is if you start in the back row, you can't attack above the top of the net if you take off from in front of the 10 ft line. So a hitter that is on the back row can attack but they jump before they reach the 10ft line. For setters, if their starting position is in the back row, they can't "attack" if, for instance, a pass is too tight. They can't jump and pop the ball over to the other side as that constitutes an attack.

Before the serve, the players do look like they are lined up all over the place seemingly random but they are all by rule still in their start positions though it may not look like it.

that said, don't be ashamed to ask questions here. Through my years in club volleyball, there are still parents who don't understand the game and they watch every point of their girls career!

Main rule differences for Olympics

Libero cannot serve
No positional faults at time of service for the serving team meaning they can be anywhere on court and not in specific rotation.
6 subs per set (HS 18 Club 15 as of this upcoming year)

There are others but those are the big ones
foulbeast

Glad they finally increased subs in juniors. 12 was dumb given most teams run 6-2.
