This was my first time seeing the team in an arena. Rice fieldhouse is well maintained, bright and clean. As soon as I passed the ticket check point, Kyndal was right there near the access to the bleechers. She looks much taller than 5'11". The aggie bench was by the entrance so it took me no time to decide where to sit.
Have the championship run "winning" formula in mind, I was hoping to detect the replacement of each critical piece. I think TCU was a good opponent for me to identify those pieces. Evan Hendrix, Lauren Murphy are still there and they were playing most of the time Saturday. I think they have a new setter now. Apparently she played well so Evan Hendrix's attack was very effective. In summary, they beat us solid and they were a better team that day.
Logan was a scorer, she blocks and digs well too. Her back roll is not spectacular but decent. Her serving is not a threat but is not weak either. So who can be her? Natalie Ring did not play against TCU but from her playing against Rice, she can definitely fill Logan's shoes if not better. Her blocking is the only area seems behind Logan's due to her height. I feel that Jamie wants Megan, Taryn Morris, or other new comers to step up for this role too. Megan is such a good fit for it but she hasn't been showing the scoring power as dominant as what Logan did for us. Her passing is first rated and her calm manner stabilized the team at times. Jamie played her opposite to Kyndal extensively during the TCU match. She played fair but not good enough to beat TCU. For now I think Megan can definitely takes Emily Hellmeth's role. Brooke Lancewell showed good attacker instincts and her swings are natural and powerful. Her height, 6' 0", could be a disadvantage in terms of blocking. Overall I think she can be a force for aggies immediately. I picture her as a potential Chloe Chicoine, 5' 10", of Louisville.
Kyndal is Kyndal. Now she stepped into a leadership role. I saw her doing some of that Saturday.
How about Ifanna and Morgan? Can Djurdja Stanojevic, Kaia Castle, Eliza Sharp meet that level of playing? I think overall they can't as of now in terms of blocking or attacking. One thing I want to say is Eliza is a gem that Jamie found. She showed her ability to dig, to block, to kill, to serve, and to bring energy to the game. Her serving is not as intimidating as ifanna's but it looked threatening and did not get handled cleanly each time.
The back court is solid or even better than last year's. Addi and Gabi bring in steady passing and defense.
Finally Maddie. I think Lily Nicholson is good but has the same height problem for blocking as with Maddie. Kirra Musgrove's height is definitely is an advantage. I noticed that most elite teams have tall setters like Bergen Reilly of Nebreska or Nayelis Cabello of Louisville. However at the end how a setter brings up the best of the attackers makes a big difference in the chance of winning it all.
On a December cruise trip I first met our 2025 Aggie team on TV. I want to thank them for drawing me into the volleyball world. My time to follow the team this close is limited. I wish they enjoy playing together as much as I enjoy seeing them cheer and cry as a team, an aggie team.
