Key quotes from Ray Childress interview:

"First of all, it was such a pleasure for me to be able to play at Texas A&M."

"I had a lot of God given ability and I could have gone to any school in the country and I chose A&M. I have never regretted it, not one day."

"I was born and raised in Memphis, but I went to high school in Dallas."

"[Being on the cover of Dave Campbell's Magazine] was one of the fondest accomplishments of my career."

"I remember everything about [the night we beat Texas my senior year]...we all came together as a team... it was something great to be a part of."

"During my career at A&M, I played with 8 running backs that went on to have NFL careers."

"We had quality players and we had quality coaches. We had a lot of great coaches on that staff led by Jackie Sherrill and that was a good ingredient for success."

"The people, the traditions, the character, the loyalty. There are just good people there. I had a really good feeling all the way through [about A&M]."

"Coach Sherrill came in and you could tell right off he wanted to do everything first-class. He wanted to do everything the right way. He wanted to build a winning program and he did."

"I really thoroughly enjoyed my career at Texas A&M."

"It was a great feeling as you can imagine [to be drafted 3rd overall in the NFL draft]."

"I see Bruce [Matthews] every once in a while. He is coaching for the Tennessee Titans now... He is the best offensive lineman to ever play football."

"I played against him every day in practice my rookie year... Trying to go against him every single day in practice was a real challenge."

"Jack Pardee was a tough football guy, a great person, and an old school guy. They don't make them like him any more."

"I played 12 years in the NFL and I played on 8 playoff teams and I never got to a conference championship game. That's the way it goes and only one team wins the Super Bowl. I played with some great players and played for some great teams but could never get to the top."

"The people in Houston have always been so supportive of me and still are to this day. I knew I needed to give back to the city on some way [with the Childress Foundation]."

"We have been able to contribute over $1.5 million over the last 23 years. It has been a great experience. So many people have been so supportive of the cause."

"I started doing the commercials for Lawrence Marshall by my rookie year in 1985."

"It is a great time to be an Aggie. Kevin Sumlin is doing a spectacular job of going in there and igniting the program."

"The way the 2012 defense played was inspiring to me."

"You can't say enough about Johnny Manziel. He is such a dynamic player. The kind of player I'm not sure I have ever seen before."

"Like everybody else I'm just anxious for college football to get started again."

"I played for the Houston Oilers for 11 seasons and my teammates named me a team captain for 9 of those seasons... I look back and I will always be proud of that accomplishment."

"I never like to draw attention to myself... we will see. Maybe one day I will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame."

He had great range and the ability to slide off blocks and make plays 10-yard either side and was such a beast at Defensive End that the Oilers made him play Defensive Tackle for half his career. He selflessly made that move, because the stupid Oilers never got real tackles with the switch to the 4-3, even though his natural position was clearly defensive end. I believe playing tackle exacerbated his back problems and shortened his career a few years.

He made more pro-bowls as a tackle and will probably go down as a HOF’er, but if the Oilers had let him play his natural defensive end position his whole career he would have gone down as the greatest defensive end of all time and probably the NFL sack leader at that position.

He’s too classy of a guy to ever complain about how he was treated, but what the Oilers did to him still irritates me to this day.
