Spring Day 15: Ogbuehi, Everett put a wrap on spring ball
Cedric Ogbuehi
* The spring went well as a whole. The guards got a lot of reps, the quarterbacks battled hard so overall it was a fun final spring.
* There were a lot of new guys who got lots of reps on the offensive line. The young guys acclimated and worked on getting comfortable with the offense.
* I feel a lot better from the first practice to today at left tackle. I feel a lot better than I did last year at this time at right tackle.
* The scrimmage was kind of shaky for the offense today. The defense did a great job which was good for them.
* The defense is playing fast and physical, and are having fun doing it. Hope that translates to the fall.
* The Taylors have been playing hard, Julien Obioha always plays hard, and the inside guys are big and strong. Overall, they have all done a great job of getting better.
* We are still far away from where we need to be, but are progressing every day.
* It’s always fun for the fans to come watch us, so it stinks not having them at the spring game. But, the stadium is going to be nice once it’s done, so it’s ok overall.
* Being in the makeshift locker rooms has been a little bit of a hassle. We can handle discomfort for a little bit to have the finished product.
* Coming out of the spring every year it’s the same thing. Things are a little shaky and there are always new players, so it takes some time getting used to. Usually everyone adapts in the fall and everyone can play a little faster.
* Watching Jake Matthews and talking with him has helped in the transition to left tackle. He’s here right now so we work out a little bit.
* It’s going to be fun watching the other battles on the offensive line. Competition brings better effort which will benefit everybody.
* Garrett Gramling is a starter. He could start for a lot of teams in the SEC. He’s a really good player. He has to work hard and try to get that open spot during fall camp. The same goes for Joe Cheek.
* Germain Ifedi surprised all of us at right tackle this spring. His footwork is better at tackle than at guard. He told us that watching Luke Joeckel, Matthews and myself that it helped him improve and it’s showing.

* The defensive backs have definitely made improvement this spring, but have to keep improving. Have to keep understanding what coach wants us to do and where to fit in the defense. We will be pretty good this year if we can get a better understanding of the game as a whole.
* Definitely getting comfortable at corner and starting to understand it more. Going back and forth from safety to corner gives you different views, but makes it hard to really understand either position.
* Definitely becoming a better player under Terry Joseph. We are buying into what he wants us to do. He has knowledge of the game that us players don’t, and we have to take that and use it to the best of our advantage.
* Victor Davis has come a long way. He’s getting smarter, but needs to show his athleticism and play faster. He’s not afraid to go out and play against the receivers and play like a first teamer. That’s what we need, so there won’t be drop off down the depth chart.
* The scrimmage was pretty good. Had a few plays where we should have made a play and didn’t, but there weren’t any real lowlights. The first scrimmage, we went out and competed but the second scrimmage we didn’t do as well. This scrimmage, we pretty much stopped them and competed with them which is what we needed to do.
* Howard Matthews is really buying into it more. Last year, he was going to do what he wanted to do, but now he’s really listening to coach and becoming a better player. Floyd Raven is athletic and gives it his all every time. His knowledge needs to go up a little bit. Clay Honeycutt is behind Raven and makes plays. He’s a smart player. Devonta Burns rotates from nickel to safety behind Matthews and is doing a good job with it.
* We had two nickels starting out, Noel Ellis and Alex Sezer. Sezer was out at first so it was just Ellis back there, but once he came back and started getting reps the competition grew between those two. Then, coach moved Burns to nickel and it has basically been a three-way battle since then.
* The intensity has been the biggest difference between Marcel Yates and Joseph. Joseph is on us every play and doesn’t let anyone take a play off. If you have eye violations or your technique is off, you’re running after practice. Getting punished for bad technique keeps you focused on doing what you need to do.
* The intensity was there today as it would have been in a normal spring game. As long as we’re competing, we don’t have to do it in front of the fans. When we go on the road, we won’t have everyone there and need to learn to bring our own intensity. We just went out there and played football today.
* We know we have to keep getting better. We’ve seen where we came from and know where we can go. It’s going to motivate us to work more and give our best.
