Key quotes from Warren Barhorst interview

"I believe in dreams and you know if you have a dream and you work on it everyday, there is a good chance it will come true. My dream to play football at Texas A&M started when I was about 10 years old."

"I almost gave it up and Dennis Mudd, who was one of the original 12 man guys who was a grad assistant, really encouraged me to stick it out. He said someday you could make a play that would change your life."

"Fate played such a big part in my success at A&M and has played a big part of my success in life."

"You know, I tell people all the time that it is a different feeling for me to go to a football game in Aggieland, because when the crowd comes up, and I've got it right now, I get goosebumps and the hair on the back of my neck is rising up and I believe that's E. King Gill talking to me telling me 'you can do it kid'."

"I mean you walk out on the field [at tryouts], there's 350 people trying out to be on the kickoff team, it was pretty intimidating."

"It was a piece of paper on the wall just like they show you in the movies and you look and see if you are cut or not. And last day there were 13 names on the list and mine was one of them."

"The first kickoff I remember today would be U of H, we were not a very nice kickoff opponent. We would make fun of the fat lineman that couldn't block us."

"What most people don't realize, there are lots of stuff going on where the teams are together [before the '88 Cotton Bowl]. The thing I remember the most was the joint-players luncheon, and Lou Holtz got up and talked about how great Notre Dame was and how great their traditions and how we were a poultry university compared to that great institution."

"Holtz had no idea what he did that day, but we decided that day that we were going to kick their butts."

"Chet Brooks had played football against Tim Brown in high school, so he came into the huddle and said someone go get his towel, it will send him over the top. So I went and I tackled him."

"Most people don't know that our 12th Man towels are basically sacred to us, and other teams would try and take them from us. So Chet knew that if we took that towel, it would send him over the top."

"So basically when I'm running down the field I try to take my block inside and luckily I was able to cut back across him and I dove and grabbed his legs and tackled (Brown)."

"Well, what people don't realize is that he had the towel basically stapled to his pants belt and I stuck my foot on his gut and ripped that towel off of his pants."

"He came running, I was all the way at the sidelines and he ran and tackled me from behind, and both benches cleared."

Great interview. I remember the Tim Brown play well while sitting in the CB (the only true venue for the game). Warren brought the crowd to its feet and it was a sight to see.

What you don't realize is that Warren mentioned the player who was really one of the first great 12th Man Kickoff Players - Dennis Mudd. I still remember the feature that ESPN did on him and a few others back in the day while focusing on the 12th Man. Dennis was one of the key players who showed tenacity and determination game in and game out before the "towel incident." He was a wild man and he exhibited the heart and soul of what Coach Sherrill was trying to build. That's an interview you ought to pursue if you really want to do the history of the 12th Man Kickoff Team credit - you had to be there to appreciate it!!!

Loved the interview, but Dennis Mudd, or gtfo! He was the hero of the second coming of the 12th man. A true American badass.

Holiday Inn hired Tim Brown immediately after that game to help them cut down on towel theft.
