Sumlin, Strong both want A&M-Texas game back

April 14, 2015

In a clever move sure to keep you huddled around the water cooler at work arguing for hours, A&M coach Kevin Sumlin and Texas' Charlie Strong have both expressed a desire to renew the rivalry, ESPN.com reported Tuesday morning.

"Now, moving into Year 4 and listening to our former students and our alumni base and knowing a lot of Texas alums, it's important that we play again," Sumlin said. "I think it will happen somewhere down the road. The tough part for both parties, when we moved, was scheduling. The first two years we scrambled just to get anybody to play, and the SEC hadn't solidified their schedule until last year. We were at the mercy of whoever would play us.

"Now that we've solidified what the SEC's scheduling theory is going to be, you've seen us become more aggressive with our nonconference schedule, and that was the knock on us early on. People sometimes take scheduling for granted and say, 'Play this team.' They don't know the process. But I think the Texas series will happen. I just don't know when."

The article later quotes Sumlin as reinforcing that he was never against continuing the series and saying that the game's importance to the alumni of both schools is what should dictate whether it resumes.

His counterpart in Austin seems to concur.

"That game is so much a part of this state," said Strong, who it's fair to note is from Arkansas. "Over 100 years, we've played that game. Why stop it now because we're in different conferences? At some point, when it's right for everybody with the different schedules, I would love to play Texas A&M again.

"Let me win some games first," he added. "Then I can push it. I don't know if I want to go walking into College Station right now."

(Smart, though in that case we may be waiting a while.)

Regimes at both schools have undergone complete overhauls since the series, which began in 1894 and has been played 118 times, went on hiatus.

Author Chris Low does well to note that, despite that, new Texas Athletic Director Steve Patterson adopted predecessor DeLoss Dodds' trademark hauteur about the series immediately after his arrival and A&M Senior Associate AD Jason Cook had previously implied the teams' only meeting would be in a bowl or playoff game.

Yet, the quotes from Sumlin and Strong come on the heels of the Monday revelation that the Aggies and Longhorns will meet again in baseball in 2016 and 2017, seemingly opening a floodgate of dialogue about the two arch-rivals who have repeatedly attempted to distance themselves from each other since 2012.

I thought it was the Aggies who were afraid of and dodged the mighty tea sippers in the Texas Bowl?
It was the horns that said they had scheduling conflicts. My position is they can stick the LHN and under no circumstance should we play them unless the cash payout is in our favor. Also let them toughen up their schedule. Playing a longhorn team with a cakewalk schedule at the end of the season while we've slugged it out with the SEC is crap.

I think there is some perception that we will somehow bring tu back from the dead by allowing them to play us. That argument sounds just like the arrogance that some of their fans would spout off. If they win, maybe they gain some recruiting traction...but Sumlin doesn't seem to have any fear there. Plus, recruits still have to weigh playing in the dumpster fire vs. the SEC regardless of who wins.

The real risk I see if they win is some bruised egoes from our fan base and having to listen to them spouting off for another 12 months. Well, boohoo. That's the way rivalries work. If they lose, well, there you have it. End of story. Done. On to the next game.

They will have ZERO leverage over us, win or lose. They aren't going to somehow suck us back in to the dumpster fire. So long as we negotiate a deal that equally benefits the schools, nobody wins anything. If you can't get that negotiated, then keep negotiating.

Will they gain additional exposure? Absolutely! They will be playing a serious rival again other than their game in Dallas.

Will we gain additional exposure? Absolutely! We're playing or former rival again (one of the top 10 most played rivalries in history...used to be top 2). We're also getting a net gain in television exposure. Would the LSU game draw more on or around Turkey day...ok, let's say 8it does. The net gain over our other nonconference opponent is significant.

What everyone should be afraid of is the sips trying to get into the SEC, that is the ultimate nightmare scenario. If they get the game they can use it to get more.

This is one ticketholder that doesn't ever want to see those tu bassturds on the field with us again.

It seems like too many people have already forgotten the bullcrap call at the end of the last game.

I don't have a problem with our Coach posturing and saying he wants to play them.

I will admit I am enjoying the stronghorn angst over our superior conference affiliation and schedule.

Seriously would we allow BDF to officiate if they was the only way to play them. From the way it sounds, a lot of Ags would.

Slippery slope isn't always a fallacy because every big time decision has unintended consequences. The last time the sips stopped playing us they made us fire the best coach we had to resume play. They used the game as a means to get what they want.

Here is a simple question that every Ag needs to answer, will the tsip administration ever be happy JUST playing the game? If you even hesitate to answer yes then we shouldn't play them.

So let's say we start the game, and after a decade the next round of conference realignment starts up and they decide they want the big time because they are stuck in the BDF. Can you honestly say that they would never consider using the game as a hostage to get into the SEC?
I assume (and hope) that you're trolling. If not, you clearly didn't read my post before quoting it; and it's absolutely a logical fallacy. You're making no argument for the point you're trying to make, just appealing to a bunch of unfounded fears. Sadly (for your argument), even if it wasn't a fallacy, those fears don't even make a convincing argument. Who cares if they won't be happy just playing the game? Who cares if later on they decide they hate being stuck in a crappy conference? That was my whole point earlier. Play the game, and if any of these "nightmare" scenarios come true and they try to force us into anything, let them walk.

Again with the nightmare scenarios... It takes a 3/4 vote for a new team to get added to the SEC. If it ever gets to that point, maybe we should stop whining and admit that if 11/14 schools think it's best for the conference, we should accept that.

AND - tu in the BIG 12 does NOT equal tu in the SEC. Are they going to bring the LHN with them? Are they going to suddenly run the conference...even the SEC West...the way they did the BDF? I don't think so.

Having one game is not going to provide leverage for adding tu to the conference. I think it would take some major changes for tu to be a target for the SEC and playing one game against us is not enough. If they are all that mighty and powerful, then we really are the little brother.

You dont know whorn. They are conniving, manipulative, and hungry for everyone else's piece of pie. They would rather steal your pie than make more pie. They love making a deal and then screwing their 'partner'. Their athletic admin has been the destruction of 2 conferences in 30 years, and it's only a matter of time before whorn sucks the Big-12 dry. Texas high school football stars are one of the key ingredients to A&M's future success. We compete with whorn for this talent. Right now, studs wanna ball against the best in the SEC. No reason to give whorn an opportunity to tell recruits 'our schedule is just as sexy as A&Ms'. Believe me when I say a matchup with A&M would give them the space to make this lie work.

Not sure how some think it would be added exposure to play these pirates. I remember a time when I had to listen to games on the radio or see it on pay per view because they weren't nationally televised. The exposure johnny and the sec gave us has done so much more than 100 years playing the tsips.

My daughter tells me abouts kids in her class, here in SoCal, that talk about how great a&m is. I remember when I was leaving for college, I had to explain to some people in the part of TX I'm from where and who a&m was. And it was always followed by, " oh you guys always lose to texas huh"

This isn't about a bruised ego. I wouldn't give ex gf's or ex wives the time of day, especially now that I don't need them ...

I said it before and I'll say it again. Some of you clowns better be careful for what you wish for. And the naivety of some of you is astounding to say the least. If you could stop for a minute with all the female emotional side of your brain taking over you might could figure this out. THERE IS NO BENEFIT FOR US TO PLAY THEM, none whatsoever. Why do you think all this is starting to surface now. Think real carefully.

Belmont is desperate for some relief on the beatdowns they are taking PR wise and on the field. All they need is a little crease in the armor and the media is all over us like white on rice. Dont think so, just look at all the stuff that was said about their perceived recruiting win. Did they win the recruiting battle in Texas. No and everyone with half a brain can see that. The problem is that the media spun it like all of a sudden tu is back man and all is well. Perception is what they care about, and it's those lies and perception that they take into a recruits living room. They still have the media wrapped around their fingers. And they will continue to do and write what they tell them.

You clowns dont even come close to realizing what they are trying to do. History is not a liar, but naive people forget it way too easily. Name me one good thing that has ever come out of being in a relationship with them. Name me one.... you cant, and never will. There MO has been the same for a 100 years. They even went so far as to quit playing us until we got a new coach cause we were kickin their butts so much.

Be careful what you wish for. Once Pandoras box is opened it cant be closed again. And we are open to anything and everything they throw at us, with no way to defend ourselves. You just made the argument for playing the game. If it doesn't hurt A&M, why put an end to over a century of bitterness and tradition over petty squabbling?

Nobody denies that t.u. needs the game far more than A&M (emphasis on needs the game versus wants), but folks also overlook that the game is a large draw in and of itself, by means of ratings and exposure. Even when one or both teams were irrelevant, it was a draw on Thanksgiving. Play the game, and you're assured of staying nationally relevant at least once a year, which leads to ratings, which leads to money, which leads to exposure, which leads to a more attractive draw for recruits, which leads to the team getting better, which leads to more coverage, which leads to the game, which leads to ratings, which leads...

Why is "I miss the rivalry" not a logical/business argument? There are two sides to business... From a customer's perspective, I prefer that one of our games be against tu, and I decide what I do with my money and TV viewing habits. There's demand, and if they want to, A&M can provide supply. From the administration's perspective there may not be enough demand to warrant adding the game, and that's fine, but I'm not part of the administration, and my role as a customer is to express demand for a service.

It's good to pull in new customers, and I don't think anyone's arguing that we shouldn't have made the changes that we have in recent years that have brought so much exposure to our wonderful university, even if those changes lead to a hiatus in the tu rivalry. At the same time though, (and with neither at the detriment of the other) it's good to remember long standing, loyal customers. Not all, but many, of these loyal customers would like to see a game against tu. Why is that not a valid thing to consider from a business perspective?

I watch college football much, much more than I watch professional football, because as a former student I feel a strong connection to A&M. Just living in the same town as a professional team doesn't establish that same connection in my mind. If I wanted to watch a bunch of teams making decisions with sole regard to the business aspects I would watch more NFL. I know NCAA is just NFL minor league, but college athletics still has a lot of passion, and that passion seems to me to be best expressed in rivalry games. I always want A&M to win, but the games are even more exciting if I also have a stand-alone desire for the other team to lose. I wish every game was a rivalry game. New or renewed rivalries vs. LSU/Bama/Arky/whoever do nothing to keep me from also wanting to maintain one of the best rivalries in sports.

There is s difference in business decisions, and poor business decisions. We wouldnt market one red cent more by playing them. We get enough national attention without them. But them not so much. Why allow them the privilege of playing us, when their arrogance is what cut it off in the first place. Everyone seems to forget that little tidbit.
These are just a few recent facts but they go way further than these.

fact: They have done everything in their power in the past to keep A&M subdued.
fact: tu had a mole in the NCAA for years and were treated with kid gloves
fact: they ran off 4 different conference mates during the tenure of the big 12
maybe fact: they sicked baylor on us during realignment
fact: The media at large is pro tu and always has been.
fact: there are referees that have made calls directly affecting the outcome of games in tu's favor for wins
fact: they cancelled the games between us
fact: stated that they would not renew the game unless in was on their terms
fact: make the remaining conference mates play them ALWAYS AT THEIR FIELD on thanksgiving without any say
fact: are still trying to control the narrative in recruiting
fact: are trying to sway public opinion in the media for the renewal of the game because they are getting throttled in all areas of PR.
fact: they need us , but we dont need them

And these are just a few, there are others but it' an extensive list. So tell me what was the reason you wanted to play them again other than in your opinion and precious little feelings you think you need this game to feel good. What a bunch of idiots that cant see the forest for the trees. When will this collective group wake up and see past your noses. tu is fastly approaching the point of having to really start to use the bagman or hire someone like Ol Freak Nasty to even begin to recover. Why would you want to give them hope by just cracking the door a bit.

No one has really given a rational , sensible reason to ever be associated with them again. You cant, because there is none, other than feeling nostalgic about the game. Go back and read the facts, let them sink in your pea brains and get back with me. But dont come on here and give me a song and dance about history , rivalry , yada, yada, yada. They are putrid to the core, and always will be. Use your brain for once and see the downside, because there is no upside for us if we take our foot off of their throats for one second. We are in the best position we have been for over the 40 years I've been watching A&M athletics. Lets keep it that way for once.

Congrats. That's probably the dumbest thing I've read this week. Nobody knows which team is orange and which team is maroon?? Do you live in a mine? JFF and his maroon are pretty much emblazened in every American's brain that has followed sports in the last decade and tu's emblem is the most recognizable college brand in the world.

I agree that LSU is not our rival. tu is. I don't care for all of the whining on this thread re: how over them we are. We have to play them again. Our identities are wrapped up in each other, for better or worse. Who cares about the stupid network deals and the bad blood from the conference reallignment. We very obviously won that debacle. Couldn't have said it better myself. We have too many losers in our fanbase that are hellbent on playing this game again yet can't provide one good logical reason it is in A&M's best interest. It's all based on emotional drivel and nostalgia. If given the chance, these same losers would move A&M back to the BDF tomorrow, take less money, less exposure, play a worse schedule so that they can have their little emotional fantasy happen again on Thanksgiving.

I don't understand the WE DON'T BENEFIT FROM PLAYING THEM argument. What is the reasoning here? How is it different from any other OOC game, aside from the fact that there is a ton of history and state bragging rights and direct recruiting implications?

If you go by the argument (as I do) that ANYTHING BAD FOR TU IS GOOD FOR A&M, then why wouldn't you play them on the field? Beating Strong would be a devastating blow for their program- all the recent recruiting success and media slanted "reemergence" would come falling down.

If you go by the argument (as I do) that ANYTHING BAD FOR TU IS GOOD FOR A&M, then why wouldn't you play them on the field? Beating Strong would be a devastating blow for their program- all the recent recruiting success and media slanted "reemergence" would come falling down.
you know what's worse for TU than us beating them on the field?

not playing them. they are not selling out games and their on the field football product is bad. People are getting indifferent to it. Renewing this game would bring emotion and focus back to their team. No thanks, let them fade away and be an afterthought.

Boy the media has really played some of you again, as they do every year.

They run to Sumlin and ask if he wants to play tu.

They run to Chobbitt and asks if he wants to play us.

Of couse, both are going to say "hell yeah, let's get it on"

And the media reports they both want the game, insinuating they are lobbying for it, when in reality, they were just answering a question.

And you guys get all riled up.

You should be smarter than that.
Spot on...expect a similar article around September! Coaches cant afford to say no...comes across as wimpy...as long as the AD remain recalcitrant...then it's all good.

tu's home conference schedule blows...and their best game is always in Dallas...otherwise it is either baylor or tcu...boring! We should do nothing to improve that!!
