Texas A&M pulls away from Yale in series opener, secures 12-5 victory

With George H.W. Bush coming to town this weekend, it was only appropriate that A&M embodied one of his favorite qualities in their series opening win versus Yale, Bush’s Alma Mater.
In the 12-5 victory on Friday evening, A&M was steadfast in its approach.
Behind big performances from J.B. Moss and Jace Vines, the Aggies built a lead, then traded punches in the seventh inning before pulling away late in the game.
Early on, A&M wasted just seconds before getting the scoring started in the bottom of the first.
On a 1-1 count, J.B. Moss blasted a lead-off homer over the wall in left and the Aggies were on the board. The lead quickly became 2-0 after Hunter Melton used a walk, wild pitch and Nick Banks’ double to circle the base paths.

The Aggies turned that into a 4-0 lead in the fourth when Nick Banks and Ryan Birk turned a single and double, respectively, into runs scored. That lead grew by two more in the sixth inning when the Aggies utilized three hits and a walk to put themselves up 6-0.
Meanwhile, Jace Vines, making his second start of the season and his first on a weekend was simply fantastic through six innings.
In the first, second, third, fifth and sixth innings, the sophomore sat the Bulldogs down in order.
“He was very sharp,” head coach Rob Childress said of the young righty. “He made quick work of them early and was really good through six innings,
“That’s what we needed on a Friday night.”
Vines used the entire plate and an array or pitches to rack up eight strikeouts, while making the Yale lineup look completely and utterly out-matched along the way. The only time during that stretch he didn't send Yale back to the dugout in order was the fourth inning, when he opted for a great escape instead.
After issuing a lead-off walk, Vines forced a chopper towards Boomer White at third. In an attempt to turn a double play, White misplayed the hop and couldn't complete the play, putting runners at first and second. Then, after a sac fly put runners on the corners, White redeemed himself defensively.

Charging in, White handled a grounder and fired home for the out, saving a run in the process. Vines froze the next batter with a beautiful pitch on the outside corner and A&M was out of the inning.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs wouldn't go so timidly in the seventh. That’s when Vines nearly perfect start came to an end, both on the mound and in the scoring sheet.
After two singles and a walk loaded the bases, Vines was pulled for Kaylor Chafin. Chafin immediately walked in a run, then another scored after a fielder’s choice. With the score 6-2, Chafin was pulled in favor of Andrew Vinson.
At that point, things got much worse before they got better.
On his first pitch, Vinson gave up a line drive homerun to Andrew Herrera that scored three and cut A&M’s lead to one run at 6-5.
The Aggies, however, were ready to swing back in the home half of the seventh.

Michael Barash gave A&M a baserunner with a one out single to right-center. After another out, back-to-back walks loaded the bases. All three moved up ninety feet when a wild pitch got away from Yale. With the lead now standing at 7-5, the offensive man of the night, J.B. Moss, drove in two more with a single up the middle.
For Moss, who had five RBI on the night, that was the biggest play of the game.
“(That Inning) was the biggest response we’ve had so far this season,” He said. “For them to throw up a five-spot in the top of the inning and us answer back was big.”
A&M would tack on another run later in the seventh, and Moss scored two more RBI with a two-out double in the eighth. A&M seized two-out opportunities throughout the game. For Childress, that was a huge takeaway from the win.
“Give Yale credit, they came up with a big inning and we were able to answer right back with a four spot and take control of the game. Offensively, out of the 12 runs we scored, nine of them were with two outs. We had a lot of big hits and gritty two-strike at-bats.”
Tomorrow, A&M will go for the series win. Before that game begins, President Bush will throw out a ceremonial first pitch at approximately 1:51.
