BOX SCORE
Not so long ago, on a baseball field not so far away, Texas A&M took on another top-10 SEC opponent and emerged with a win -- this time on Star Wars night at Olsen Field.
Putting down the Rebels in a way that would have done Darth Vader proud, the Aggies rode two hot arms and an explosive sixth inning rally to their 40th win of the season, beating No. 7 Ole Miss, 6-1.
Brigham Hill set the tone for the Aggies on the mound, striking out two in his first inning of work. Working a nasty change-up, the sophomore breezed through the first five batters before allowing a solo home run with two outs in the second that tied the game, 1-1.
Hill settled in after that, and was dominant on the bump. Allowing just three more hits through his seven innings of work and walking just one hitter while striking out eight, he mowed his way through the Rebel line-up time and again.
"He was very competitive last week, very determined. He got us off to a great start," head coach Rob Childress said. "He had to pitch out of some tough jams and made pitches when we needed him to."
The Aggie bats helped him out in the sixth. Doing their best to make the Rebel pitching staff look like the remnants of Alderaan, the Aggie hitters batted around in the frame, scoring five runs on six hits.
Nick Choruby led things off with a single and was quickly driven in by a double from J.B. Moss. Hunter Melton joined the party one batter later, hitting a double of his own to score Moss. Ryne Birk, Nick Banks and Jonathan Moroney then hit three singles in a row to round out the rally and put the Aggies up, 6-1.
"It's always nice (when the offense does that)," said an appreciative Hill. "It lets you kind of relax and just pitch. You can pitch it more over the middle and trust your stuff."
Hill gave way to closer Mark Ecker in the eighth inning, and the stalwart junior was great once again. In two innings, Ecker gave up just one hit and struck out two, keeping the Rebels at arm's length on the way to a series-opening win.
The Rebels will attempt to strike back at the Aggies tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. at Olsen Field.
