Aggie Lindon Victor breaks collegiate decathlon record for second time
For the second time in as many months, Texas A&M junior decathlete Lindon Victor has broken the NCAA record for overall score in the Men’s Decathlon.
Lindon broke the record for the first time this year back in March at the Texas Relays in Austin. This time, however, Victor went to work at the SEC Championships in Columbia, South Carolina. In March, Victor checked in with a total score of 8,472, and today he bested his own record, posting a mark of 8,539 to be crowned the SEC Champion.
After setting a solid pace on day one by totaling 4,365 points through five events and placing first in three, Victor had ideas of once again breaking the record on day two.
In the first two events on Friday, the 110 M hurdles and the discuss throw, he kept up his dominating pace, never giving the competition a chance to catch up. He won the hurdles event with a time of 14.45 seconds and set a personal record in the discus with a throw of 181 feet and two inches, out-throwing the next-best competitor by almost 38 feet to secure first place in his fifth straight event.
The third event on Friday, the pole vault, was the one weak link when Victor broke the record back in March. During that competition, he cleared only 14 feet and 1.25 inches, but that wasn't the case in Columbia. After failing to clear on his first two-attempts at 15 feet and five inches, he finally cleared on his third attempt to record a personal record and add 819 points to his total.
Lindon closed the day with another personal record in the javelin throw at 226 feet and 3 inches and a smooth time of 4:55.91 in the 1500 M to once again break the collegiate record. Victor’s day two total of 4,174 also set the record for the most second-day points by a decathlete.
