Fall Game #1: Texas A&M 11, Sam Houston State 3
Box Score

A lightning delay may have slowed down first pitch, but it didn’t slow down the Aggies in their first scrimmage of the fall season. The Texas A&M offense came out ready to swing the bat and amassed 16 hits throughout the 12-inning scrimmage against the Sam Houston State Bearkats. The Maroon and White came out on top 11-3 to finish out the game.

Asa Lacy started the game on the hill for A&M and put together a solid showing in the two innings he toed the rubber. The Bearkats managed only one hit off the lefty and plated a lone run on a sacrifice fly to center. Lacy punched out four Bearkats during his night on the mound.

Chris Weber (Fr), Landry Wideman (Fr), and Bryce Miller (So) made their pitching debuts for the Aggies. Each pitcher struck out a batter and showed poise with runners on base, keeping Sam Houston State scoreless through the middle frames.

Braden Shewmake leads a young Aggie roster into fall camp, going 3 for 4 in the Friday night scrimmage.

Texas A&M threw eight different pitchers in total. Combined, the pitching staff gave up just seven hits (four of which came in the first four innings) and struck out 13. The Bearkats were held without a hit for a large portion of the game, failing to reach base via the hit from the fifth through the tenth frame. Meanwhile, the Aggie defense played error free baseball for all 12 innings behind their pitching staff.

"I was really proud of our team, for us finishing up our second week of fall practice, to come out and throw it over the plate for the most part and play flawless defense for 12 innings," head coach Rob Childress said. "I couldn't be more proud of that."

The three Bearkat runs were scored either very early or very late, with one run coming in the second inning and two coming across in the eleventh. The only big hit came in the latter frame when Jordan Cannon launched a triple off the center field wall. Cannon led the offense for Sam Houston State with two hits in three at bats, driving in two of the Bearkats’ three runs.

Shortstop Braden Shewmake led the charge on offense for the Aggies with three hits in four tries, featuring a triple and a home run (both of which came off starting pitcher Nick Mikolajchak). Brett Brown added a home run of his own in the ninth inning on a shot to left field. Zach DeLoach had a solid night at the plate as well, going 2 for 4 with a double and single.

"Offensively, I thought early in the game we did a nice job for the first six innings," said Childress. "We split the game in two, so we played with pressure in the last six innings. We made some pitches to get off the field there in the 11th with Kyle Richardson getting a pop-up and a ground ball with a runner at third and a chance to tie the second half of the game. I am proud of our team and we took care of the routine."

The Aggies will look to build off their excellent performance tonight as they go through the remainder of fall camp. Their next scrimmage is against Rice on October 26 in Houston.
