Top 5 Aggie Bonfire Games of All-Time

We’ve been counting down the best Bonfire Games in Texas A&M’s history. Below is the final compilation of the top five:

Game 5: Texas A&M 20, Texas 0 (Nov. 30, 1939)

The Aggies completed an undefeated regular season with a dominant win over their arch-rival. They also clinched the national championship, which they later validated with a Sugar Bowl victory. A&M allowed Texas just three first downs the entire game.

Game 4: Texas A&M 10, Texas 7 (Nov. 23, 1967)

Sixteen seconds after the Longhorns had taken a 7-3 lead in the fourth quarter, quarterback Edd Hargett and receiver Bob Long connected for an 80-yard touchdown pass that proved to be the game-winner. The victory propelled A&M into the Cotton Bowl. Coach Gene Stallings once called it “the happiest moment of my athletic career.”

Game 3: A&M 37, Texas 12 (Nov. 23, 1984)

Anthony Toney rushed for two touchdowns, Craig Stump passed for two and Eric Franklin kicked three field goals to deny Texas the Southwest Conference championship. The A&M defense posted two interceptions and four sacks. The win started a decade of dominance over the Longhorns.

Game 2: A&M 42, Texas 10 (Nov. 28, 1985)

Quarterback Kevin Murray threw three touchdown passes as the Aggies clinched the Southwest Conference championship. Roger Vick and Ira Valentine each ran for touchdowns in the blowout. A&M held a 28-0 lead going into the fourth quarter. Cotton fell like snow from the Kyle Field bleachers as jubilant Aggies celebrated.

Game 1: A&M 20, Texas 16 (Nov. 26, 1999)

Inspired by the memory of 12 students who died in the Bonfire accident, the Aggies rallied from a 16-6 halftime deficit to pull out a 20-16 victory. A&M rallied with a 9-yard Ja’Mar Toombs touchdown run and Randy McCown’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Matt Bumgardner. Linebacker Brian Gamble recovered a Texas fumble in the last minute to clinch the emotional win.

If you're Class of '86, wouldn't '85 have been your senior year?

Great list. Attended 1985 as well. I have to say the 1993 game was quite the game. An Incredible cold front blew through Texas that week and made the conditions more like Iceland than central Texas (see the Cowboys and Leon Lett versus the Dolphins).
