TexAgs All-SEC Team of the Week: Week 11
The next-to-last weekly All-SEC team looked much like several of the others.
Stars shine brightest in games that mean the most. That was again apparent last week as some of the top individuals in the SEC had spectacular performances.
Offense
Quarterback: Kyle Trask (Florida)
Trask, a senior from Manvel High, threw for 433 yards and four touchdowns in the Gators’ victory at Tennessee. It was his third 400-yard game of the season and the seventh time in nine games that he has thrown at least four touchdown passes. Some context: From 2010 (the year following Tim Tebow’s senior season) to the start of this season, UF quarterbacks had zero 400-yard games.
Running Back: Kevin Harris (South Carolina) and Larry Rountree (Missouri)
Harris, a sophomore, has been a bright spot in a dismal South Carolina season, and that continued in the Gamecocks’ season-ending loss to Kentucky (yes, the Gamecocks are eligible for a bowl, but come on: They are 2-8). He had 210 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and now has 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. Rountree, a senior, rushed for 185 yards and three scores in Mizzou’s victory over Arkansas. It was his second consecutive three-touchdown game, and the yardage total was the second-highest of his career.
Wide Receiver: Treylon Burks (Arkansas), DeVonta Smith (Alabama) and Kadarius Toney (Florida)
Burks, a sophomore, had 10 catches for a career-high 206 yards and a touchdown in Arkansas’ loss to Mizzou. It was his second game this season with double-digit receptions and the fourth with 100 receiving yards. Smith, a senior from Louisiana, had eight receptions for 231 yards and three touchdowns as Alabama hammered host LSU. He had seven catches for 219 yards in the first half. It was his second 200-yard game of the season and the fourth of his career, which is a school record. He leads the nation with 15 touchdown receptions. Toney, a senior, had eight receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown in Florida’s win. He has more receptions (53), receiving yards (649) and receiving touchdowns (eight) this season than he had in his first three seasons combined.
Offensive Line: Luke Fortner (Kentucky), Sedarius Hutcherson (South Carolina), Ricky Stromberg (Arkansas), Kenyon Green (Texas A&M) and Ryan McCollum (Texas A&M)
Fortner, a senior, and his linemates opened big holes as UK rushed for 291 yards and five touchdowns in a rout of South Carolina. Hutcherson, a senior, has been the Gamecocks’ best lineman this season, and he again played well in the loss to UK, helping pave the way for Harris. The Gamecocks rushed for 297 yards. Stromberg, a sophomore, helped Arkansas’ o-line control the line of scrimmage in its loss to Mizzou (of course, the Mizzou o-line did the same thing). The Hogs finished with 292 rushing yards, 566 total yards and 34 first downs. Green and McCollum excelled in the Aggies’ 313-yard rushing explosion against Auburn.
Defense
Defensive Line: EDGE Will Anderson Jr (Alabama), E Zach Carter (Florida) and E Byron Young (Alabama)
Anderson, a true freshman, sets career-highs with eight tackles and two sacks in Alabama’s rout of LSU. Carter, a junior, had four tackles, a sack and another tackle for loss as Florida’s defense did a good job in stifling Tennessee’s rushing attack. Young, a sophomore, had three tackles, a half-sack and another tackle for loss in the Tide’s easy win.
Linebacker: Aaron Hansford (Texas A&M), Zakoby McClain (Auburn), Ventrell Miller (Florida) and Jamar “Boogie” Watson (Kentucky)
Hansford, a senior, had eight tackles, a sack and another tackle for loss in the Aggies’ win at Auburn. McClain, a 6-0, 211-pound junior, had a career-high 17 tackles, a sack, another tackle for loss and a forced fumble in Auburn’s loss to A&M. It was his fourth game this season with double-digit tackles, and he is second in the league with 94 stops. Florida’s defense did a good job against Tennessee’s rushing attack and Miller – a junior – was a big reason the Gators held the Vols to 99 rushing yards. He led UF with 12 tackles and also had a sack. Watson, a senior, had eight tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles in the Wildcats’ victory.
Defensive Back: S Yusuf Corker (Kentucky), S DeMarcco Hellams (Alabama), CB Josh Jobe (Alabama) and CB Myles Jones (Texas A&M)
Corker, a junior, had six tackles, a tackle for loss, an interception and a pass breakup in Kentucky’s victory against South Carolina. Hellams, a sophomore reserve, had a team-high eight tackles in the Tide’s win at LSU. He added a tackle for loss and a pass breakup. Jobe, a junior, had six tackles, a sack and two pass breakups for the Tide. Jones, a senior from Magnolia West, had a team-high eight tackles in the Aggies’ victory. He helped limit Auburn to just 144 passing yards.
Specialists
Kicker: Harrison Mevis (Missouri)
A true freshman, Mevis kicked five field goals, including a 32-yarder on the final play to give the Tigers the win over Arkansas. Mevis also hit a 51-yarder as he tied a school record with five field goals in a game.
Punter: Max Duffy (Kentucky)
Duffy, a senior, punted four times and dropped three inside the 20 as UK beat South Carolina. He averaged 45.0 on his four attempts, including a 51-yarder.
Returner: Dak Joyner (South Carolina)
Joyner, a sophomore who arrived at South Carolina as a quarterback before moving to wide receiver, had two kick returns for 75 yards, including a 52-yarder, in the Gamecocks’ loss.
