Aggies run-rule Lamar, 13-3, to conclude 4-1 weekend in Reveille Classic
To say Haley Lee has been dominant would be a massive understatement.
In Texas A&M’s final game in the Reveille Classic, the Aggies’ hitting strength was on full display. Lee controlled the narrative, hitting three home runs, the last of which a grand slam to run-rule Lamar, 13-3.
“[I’m] happy to come out today and really offensively take care of business,” said Texas A&M head coach Jo Evans. “We challenged our team last night after our games to have more energy in the way we play the game in our at-bats, in our dugouts and taking charge of games.”
A&M’s offense was so good that the Cardinals used three different pitchers. The Aggies scored in every inning, and the mercy rule went into effect in the fifth inning.
Lee asserted her strength right early, hitting a home run during her first at-bat of the ballgame in the first.
In the bottom of the second, three Aggies touched home plate. An RBI base hit from Trinity Cannon allowed Dani Elder to score. Makinzy Herzog then hit a two-run double down the left field line, scoring Mariana Torres and Bre Warren.
Lee launched her second home run of the game in the third.
The Aggies showcased their speed in the fourth. Both Herzog and Ashlynn Walls stole bases during the frame as A&M tallied four runs in the inning. Shaylee Ackerman hit a two-run double, and Elder hit a two-run blast to left.
The Cardinals managed to answer in the fifth inning with a three-run home run from junior infielder Kaylee Ancelot.
Due to the strong offensive success, fans at Davis Diamond were able to witness some young talent as freshman infielder Mariana Torres notched her first career hit in the fifth. Evans said the young players earned their time on the field.
“Our freshman class is really good,” Evans said. “They’re battling for playing time, and they deserve their opportunities, for sure.”
Lee ended the ballgame with a grand slam and now has hit nine longballs on the young season. The Kingwood native said adapting to the pitching style of the Lamar pitcher(s) assisted her in the box.
“My first two home runs were both inside pitches,” Lee said. “We came to the conclusion that they were probably not going to throw that pitch again, so we really bought into the outside part of the plate for that last at-bat.”
Evans used her senior right-handed pitcher Kayla Poynter the entire matchup. The four-year veteran punched out seven Cardinals.
Next for the Aggies is a Tuesday doubleheader with Texas Southern in Bryan-College Station. The first contest begins at 3 p.m. at Davis Diamond.
