During Friday's edition of TexAgs Radio, the fish bowl's own Richard Zane joined to share updates from the latest in Aggie Athletics as there is plenty to run down from the track, the diamonds, the tennis courts and much more.


Track & Field
The Aggies are competing in the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville this weekend.

  • The meet began on Thursday and continues through Saturday.

Tyra Gittens won the individual national title and set a collegiate record in the pentathlon with a score of 4,764 points on Thursday.

  • Pat Henry on Gittens: “It was the finest effort any collegiate athlete has ever had.”

On Wednesday, it was announced that Gittens and Athing Mu had earned Southeastern Conference honors.

  • Gittens was named the SEC’s Women’s Field Athlete of the Year.
  • Mu was named the SEC’s Women’s Runner of the Year and the SEC’s Women’s Freshman Runner of the Year.

Men’s Tennis (10-3, 4-2 in SEC play)
No. 12 Texas A&M upset No. 2 Baylor, 4-3, on Thursday at the Mitchell Tennis Center. This win comes after the Aggies lost to Baylor 1-4 in the ITA Kick-off tournament on Feb. 7.

  • A&M took the all-important doubles point, 2-0.
  • Valentine Vacherot defeated Matias Soto on Court #1 (6-3; 4-6; 6-3)
  • Juan Carlos Aguilar won his match in straight sets (6-2; 6-3)
  • Bjorn Thompson won his match in straight sets (6-1; 7-6)

The Aggies travel to Fayetteville on Sunday to face Arkansas at the Billingsley Tennis Center. The match begins at 1:00 p.m. CT.

Men’s Golf
The Aggies swept the SEC Men’s Golf Weekly Awards this week.

  • Junior Sam Bennet was named the SEC’s Golfer of the Week after winning the Cabo Collegiate last week at TPC San Antonio.
  • Freshman Daniel Rodrigues was named the SEC’s Freshman of the Week following his strong showing in the Cabo Collegiate, his performance vital in helping the Aggies finish 3rd in the tournament.

A&M is up to No. 6 Golfstat Team Ranking. The Aggies will play in the Tiger Invitational next week (Monday-Wednesday) in Opelika, Alabama.

Men’s Basketball (8-10, 2-8 in SEC play)
The Aggies concluded their season on Wednesday as they lost to Vanderbilt, 79-68, in the opening round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

  • Emanuel Miller scored 22 points as four Aggies scored in double figures.

Baseball (11-4, 0-0 in SEC play)
After sweeping their midweek slate again this week, Texas A&M is riding a seven-game winning streak.

  • Tuesday: Texas A&M 7, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 0
  • Wednesday: Texas A&M 22, Prairie View A&M 2 (Final/7)

A&M hosts Samford this weekend in their final non-conference weekend series of the season.

Softball (13-3, 0-0 in SEC play)
On Tuesday, the Aggies swept Texas Southern in a doubleheader, run-ruling the Tigers in both games.

Texas A&M returns to Davis Diamond this weekend for five games as they host Montana and Louisiana Texas in the 2021 Davis Diamond Classic, the Aggies’ final non-conference weekend before league play begins.

  • Game 2: vs. Louisiana Tech - Fri. at 5:30 p.m. CT - streaming on the SEC Network+

Volleyball (8-4, 8-4 in SEC play)
Texas A&M travels to Athens this weekend to play a pair of matches with Georgia.

Women’s Tennis (10-3, 2-1 in SEC play)
Texas A&M has had their matches against No. 21 Tennessee and No. 3 Georgia, both of which were scheduled to be in Bryan-College Station, postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Aggies’ program.

  • As it stands now, A&M’s next match will be with LSU on Saturday, March 27, at the Mitch Tennis Center.
