Week Three's Overnight Sensation: Demond Demas, Wide Receiver
Each Monday during the 2021 Texas A&M football season, we’ll identify a first or second-year Aggie player who delivered an exceptional performance and earned the distinction of being the week’s ‘Overnight Sensation.’
The breakout we've all been waiting for.
Wide receiver Demond Demas came to Aggieland surrounded by high expectations as a five-star prospect in the class of 2020 but played sparingly during Texas A&M's Orange Bowl Championship campaign a year ago.
The talent finally shone through in a big way on Saturday as the second-year freshman showed the 12th Man exactly what he is capable of in the Aggies' 34-0 rout of New Mexico.
On the very first play of A&M's second series, quarterback Zach Calzada looked deep and found a wide-open Demas, who had gotten lost in coverage. The Tomball native reeled in a pass that soared 52 yards in the air and took it the final 18 for a 70-yard long touchdown to give the Maroon & White an early two-score advantage.
In addition to it being his first career touchdown, it was also Demas' first career reception, and he definitely celebrated accordingly.
"Demond is fast. Nobody is going to run with him," said running back Isaiah Spiller postgame. "He's going to have a bright future. I'm proud of him; happy for him today."
Demas' only other catch came on the Aggies' first play of the second half, taking a Calzada pass for 30 yards to reach the century mark for the first time in his career. In total, the talented wideout was targeted seven times in the game.
"He's got all the ability in the world, and he's really practicing good, doing good, " said head coach Jimbo Fisher postgame. "I'm very pleased with his progress right now, and if we're going to be who we can be, he needs to be a part of it, that's for sure."
Among a young receiving corps, Demas wasn't alone in notching career firsts.
Fellow second-year freshmen Muhsin Muhammad III and Devin Price also hauled in their first receptions as Aggies, with Muhammad making a highlight-reel catch of his own to score A&M's final touchdown of the day.
Muhammad finished with three grabs for 24 yards, while Price had one catch for seven yards. Still, it was Demas that stole the show.
Hopefully, there are more Hollywood highlights in the weeks to come.
