Women's golf coach Gerrod Chadwell describes emotions after winning SEC title

Your 2023 women's golf team are SEC Champions! Behind a playoff win from Zoe Slaughter, Gerrod Chadwell's squad claimed their second conference title. On Monday's edition of TexAgs Radio, Chadwell detailed the great weekend he and his team had.

Key notes from Gerrod Chadwell interview

  • It still hasn't really sunk in yet. It's almost like a national championship week. You go through almost two tournaments in one. It felt like it mirrored a national championship week.

  • So much drama going on within the team last year. There happens to be some of that with our sport. You know once we cleaned that up, we had a championship run at the national championship. A lot of things happened for us to be able to clean that up from last year. To get dumped by Auburn in the final match 5-0 last year, it made us so comfortable to be back in that environment. Once you see a team that's comfortable, you get out of the way.

  • We talked after all the craziness. They truly do love each other. Mississippi State has the same thing going on, and it shows. Our girls are so bought into pushing each other. This is great but there are so many greater moments ahead of them. We got the right recipe for that, and all the different personalities meshed so well together.

  • It’s stuff we worked on, and hopefully that gave her a little bit of confidence. Blanca Fernández García-Poggio when she is focused she is one of the best players in the country. The greens were rock hard so you had to be dialed into how hard you are going. Blanca really struggled the first round, and we almost had Lana Calibuso-Kwee come in and sub in for her, but then she turned in two good rounds after that.

  • I could go on and on about all five of them. They're all unique, and they're all going to have a story to tell about this last week and these last two years. We are really only going to lose Hailee Cooper. People took a chance on us. We weren’t really good two years ago.

  • It’s interesting because I don't want to get into the Aggie conspiracy theory of selection shows. I had a supporter text me asking where I thought we would go, and I told him I didn’t care and that I would take this team to the moon and compete. I don’t really care. I am so thankful for the opportunity.

Great job ladies and coach. I certainly hope the team gets proper recognition for this accomplishment.
