O'Gara: It'll be strength vs. strength when Texas A&M hosts Alabama
Saturday Down South’s Connor O’Gara joined Monday morning’s episode of TexAgs Radio to share his observations from Texas A&M's 34-22 victory over Arkansas. He also looks ahead to preview a huge matchup at Kyle Field with Alabama coming to Aggieland.
Key notes from Connor O’Gara interview
- A&M’s corners were put in a tough spot against Arkansas. They got pressure. Arkansas’ offensive line might be the worst in the SEC. It is a wild thing to think about 15 TFL, but give all of the credit to A&M.
- Auburn is a better team at home. That offensive line played much better. A&M has done better things upfront to get to the quarterback. They are scheming it in ways that have the opponent off-balance. The contrast is the offense for A&M. When was the last time we said that? In 2020? You can give up plays on defense because of how explosive your offense looks.
- In the five games that Bobby Petrino has coached, the Aggies have hit 27 points each time. The last time a Jimbo Fisher-coached team did that was in 2014 with Jameis Winston at Florida State. This thing looks really good. Give some credit to Max Johnson.
- The Alabama defense has played lights out since Texas. This is a strength-on-strength matchup.
- The SEC is wide open. What team hasn't had a game in which they haven't shown holes? Florida State has defensive issues. Everybody in the SEC has weaknesses that can get you beat. It could make for a crazy year and weekend. If Texas A&M beats Alabama, this thing will be wide open, and I have no idea.
- This matchup is terrible for LSU. That secondary has gotten ripped up. This Missouri passing attack could light it up. Mizzou could be 6-0. We won't know what good and bad is in this league.
- Brian Kelly won't hear the buyout talk as much as Jimbo Fisher did last year. When Kelly loses a game, the internet tees off. People love to hate him. This is the most talented team he has had, but they are already out of the playoff discussion.
- Ole Miss is a pendulum that swings far and wide. Defensively, they do play more bend-don't-break. After Alabama, I don't trust Jaxson Dart. I have skepticism about Ole Miss. Dart has shown some nice things, but he is not where you want him to be.
- Kentucky's offensive line was scrutinized heavily last year. That passing game is not in sync. Ray Davis has looked the part. He is a phenomenal player.
- Tennessee is a bad matchup for A&M. They run the football well. They fire off the football at Neyland. South Carolina is a one-trick pony with Spencer Rattler and Xavier Legette.
- Penn State, defensively, is lights out. What is James Franklin going to do to ruin his chances of winning? That is always the big hangup I have about Penn State.
