During Monday's edition of TexAgs Radio, we caught up with the "Voice of the Aggies" as Andrew Monaco offered his thoughts on all things Texas A&M hoops. Monaco also discussed Mike Elko's first couple of months as head coach and the youthful quarterback room.

Key notes from Andrew Monaco interview

  • When you go into a game and it says the opposition is great at offensive rebounding, the team sees it, but it is nonstop the way they attack the glass. That is it. It is not sexy, but it's effective when they do it.

  • Can you do it for 40 minutes? That's the consistency. That is part of the identity. They have adapted. They have played without Tyrece Radford, Henry Coleman III and Solomon Washington at times. They got in foul trouble without Coleman last week. It was a masterful job by the coaching staff. Wade Taylor IV had two fouls and sat most of the first half.

  • Teams will blitz Taylor then you see Radford bringing it up the floor. That is a maturity you can't measure. Radford is an elite rebounder. I don't know how you defend him with a late shot clock. His influence and legacy, these young guys will learn from him. His presence is immeasurable.

  • Jace Carter has had a toughness to him in SEC play. He seems to be more comfortable. On Saturday, you go with a three-guard lineup. Carter gets the early shot to fall. With Taylor on the bench, he had a scoring responsibility.

  • I hope Carter doesn't get mad at me for saying this. He got a cut on his eye against Arkansas, and he told me, “Well, I am still a good-looking guy."

  • It's the "why." The days of throwing a scouting report at players are over. The staff weaves in videos, stories, writing, etc. It is very much the 21st century. They understand the "Why."

  • With Mike Elko, hitting the ground running isn't even appropriate. On Dec. 28, he took over. The relationships and reaching out early to your own players. His familiarity helps. He reached out to the Texas High School Coaches Association. Those relationships will continue throughout each class.

  • Can we use one quarterback for one season? We have not done it. It speaks to the depth and being prepared. Let's try to go through the season with Conner Weigman. He did not get the oppurtunity to play against Alabama or play on the road at Tennessee. These players absolutely play for him.
