Key notes from Olin’s thoughts on Owens
- We talked about Rueben Owens yesterday. I think that just goes to show what's expected of him and why it's such a significant loss. Here's a guy we all expected to break out, and we projected him as a top-10 player on the entire team. He certainly has that ability, and it hurts that he's not going to be there because he's a weapon.
- It's one thing when you look at the measurables and say potential, but when you see a guy go out and actually perform... You see what he's capable of as a freshman, and then you're thinking, “OK, the next year, different scheme, better players all around him, his own personal growth, what could he be?”
- I don't know if he’d be a 1,000-yard back because I don't know if A&M would feature him enough or give him enough carries, but I would have been very confident that he was going to amass well over 1,000 all-purpose yards if you put in his ability to catch the ball, run with it and return kicks.
- Part of a good team is being able to overcome setbacks, even as great of a setback as losing Rueben Owens.
- One of the things that they're gonna have to tinker with is that Owens would have been really good, as was his ability to catch the ball in the backfield. Owens has always been a hell of a weapon.
