Catching up with former Texas A&M tight end Jace Sternberger

Former Texas A&M tight end Jace Sternberger is still pondering whether or not he'll play another season in the UFL. On Tuesday morning, he joined TexAgs Live to offer his thoughts on the 2024 Aggies, the Las Vegas Bowl matchup with USC and much more.

Key notes from Jace Sternberger interview

  • I'm a full-time dad, and I'm getting worn out. My son just turned three, and he never sits still. I'm in Houston now, being a normal person.

  • My time in the UFL was 10 times better than I initially thought. I think everybody goes through it at first. You get over your ego, and it's like, "I guess I will play in this league." Once I got in there, I was fortunate to be on the team that has won it the last three years. It made me enjoy football all over again. It was a blessing. With Daryl "Moose" Johnston being our owner, you respected the process. There were some little things, but it made me appreciate it more.

  • I always said that I would be done, but when it comes around, the band always seems to get back together. I am waiting to see who comes in at quarterback. I'm getting older. I have been fortunate that our quarterback has won league MVP the past few years.

  • I don't want to say that Texas A&M was better than expected because I said we would have three losses this year. I didn't understand how good of a recruiter Mike Elko would be. We will never worry about the transfer portal and getting the wrong guy. Elko understands the culture and who we need to bring in. Guys like Scooby Williams, I didn't know of before the season. I went to a couple of games this year, and every time I returned, I wanted to see guys like him. Those guys help us have that second-half adjustment when we are down ten points. This was a unified football team, and it will only improve. I told Billy Liucci that this would be our worst year under Elko. No one at A&M wants to hear that it will take time, but it's growing pains. I'm excited, but I'm always excited.

  • Hearing this A&M team in the press conferences, it sounds like they are not satisfied. I was at the coach's clinic in Houston listening to Elko speak, and I was influenced. Your players are preaching the same message, and everyone is in sync. You want longevity. When Marcel Reed talks, he sounds like a young man who will be a good leader. He reminds me of Kellen Mond. Everyone was rallying behind Reed.

  • If Reed can top his last bowl performance, that would be incredible. He went ballistic last year. This will be good for the young guys taking the spots of the guys going to the draft so they can get some momentum going into the spring.

  • I am intrigued by the Las Vegas Bowl. Being a former Oklahoma kid, I would love to see us send Lincoln Riley on his way. I know the kids will enjoy Las Vegas. That's always a good time.

  • You need a reliable third-down target. When you have that, it's hard on defenses. I would love to see our defensive line keep getting ferocious because if you get a front seven in college, you can't lose with that.
