After tying for fifth place at the Moon Golf Invitational in Florida to open the spring slate, Texas A&M women's golf head coach Gerrod Chadwell joined us in studio on Thursday's edition of TexAgs Live to preview the Chevron Collegiate Tournament in Humble next week.

Key notes from Gerrod Chadwell interview

  • The Moon Golf Invitational was probably the toughest field we'll play all year. I was curious to see where we are in that field.

  • We had a chance to win going into the last day, but we didn't play well enough. We were holding onto second place for a while there, but one bad hole late plummeted us down the leaderboard a little bit. A top-five finish early.

  • We told the ladies when we got home that there was more good than bad. To be in a position to win on the last day, that's what you ask for. We had a chance going into the back nine. If we can do that every week, a lot of good things are going to happen.

  • For a lot of those ladies, it was their first time in a playoff-caliber field. To accomplish what we want to accomplish, we'll have to beat them. We did it in the first event out in the spring. It's a quick turnaround, but I'm ready to get back out there.

  • No disrespect to the previous A&M teams, but those were the old team's stories. This team can write their own story. I think it's disrespectful in a way to assume that it's going to happen. We have a lot of new faces. I knew going into this season that we were going to get better every week. Maybe we took for granted our previous teams, but this group is relishing the chance to test themselves.

  • It's us against us. We are trying to be the best version of ourselves every week. We assess what goes wrong, unpack it and keep moving forward.

  • It's why I was upset and disappointed in the late mistakes we had because we had gotten used to a group that didn’t do that. Good teams don't do that. I still think we are a good team. We were disappointed because we knew the standard.

  • I had a great talk with Kynadie Adams, and I'm just saying nobody is putting us in the championship. I didn't see any celebrating like we arrived, so that’s a good thing. I saw them practicing on their day off, so I think we have the culture to keep going.

  • It was a great performance by Vanessa Borovilos. She had it really going her front nine, made a mistake at the turn and ended up shooting 76. If you had told me that was happening, I would have said something went horribly wrong. She looked really good leading into that. To post two red numbers to help us out says so much about a freshman. We're very excited that we will get to see a lot of golf from her.

  • Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio made a triple on the hole that really hurt the team. She didn’t have her best stuff on the last day. She had a late triple bogey that really derailed a good finish. We talked to the airport about a plan coming back, and she wants to get back to that. I don't worry about her. She was very upset, but we weren't worried about her.

  • I told them that the best thing a competition wants is to get back in the arena. I'm ready to get back in and get back to work.

  • Winning in our sport is very hard because you have to beat 14 other teams. Everybody remembers the postseason. Everything is a build to that. I try to pride my programs on winning in April and May. It's still February, and it feels like it in more ways than one. I'm ready to get back on the road and compete.
