Texas A&M's elite golfers Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio and Scarlett Schremmer are competing in the 2025 Augusta National Women's Amateur this week. Aggie head coach Gerrod Chadwell joined TexAgs Live to provide an update on his program from Georgia.

Key notes from Gerrod Chadwell interview

  • Everything's good in Augusta. Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio is just getting started with her rounds and made two great pars to start. Scarlett Schremmer birdied her second hole today, so she probably needs something around par or slightly under to make the cut Saturday at Augusta National.

  • Schremmer was one-over, and Fernández García-Poggio was even yesterday. They're both off to good starts today. Everything is soft. Fernández García-Poggio got to watch the 63 shots yesterday, so she probably felt like she shot 100.

  • The hole looks a lot smaller, and in some ways, you're trying to get out of their way. One of the girls withdrew. They were playing in a two-some. You are constantly waiting on the group in front. One thing about Fernández García-Poggio is her maturity and handling things better. She did a great job with that yesterday.

  • Her sister, Blanca Fernández García-Poggio, was on the back yesterday and today. I caddied four in the practice round. In years past, this champions retreat is played harder than Augusta National. I say that with no disrespect to Augusta, but its conditions and everything that's happened over here made the Wednesday to Thursday rounds just a little harder.

  • If you've had the privilege or opportunity to go to the Masters, there's not a piece of pine straw out of place. No stone overturned. It's just perfect. That’s how it is to the young ladies.

  • I told Stacy, my wife, that this was better than any professional event I'd ever been to. This is No. 2 above any event that I've been to, maybe parallel with the major championship on the women's side. But for some, this is the best it gets. It's the best golf tournament they will ever play in. Just what they do starting on Monday is first-class all around. They fly parents in. It's just first class, period.

  • The interesting thing with Schremmer is, I got to watch her a couple of weeks ago at a junior event, she’s going from 400th in the world to 80th. She’s playing in all these events really fast, and her expectations are really high, even as a junior player. You don't get away with mistakes here. You have to be clean to market the cut for Saturday. Their experience from the spot will be a lot more than what's transmitted with some of our freshman classes.

  • We finished the final round really well at the Charles Schwab Women's Collegiate. We just got off to a bad start. I was a little disappointed. I thought that was the space where we could play really well, where pars were premium. Stanford won it all. I was disappointed because we would've thought we'd play better there.

  • The "Mo"Morial Invitational is for Monica Welsh. Everyone's familiar with that family. General Mark A. Welsh III, this is his sister who passed in a tragic car accident after her time on the team at A&M. Not only that, but it's the only home tournament we have all year. You'll see a different version of our girls. To be able to play at home is exciting. The number of people, traditions, volunteers, and you name it, who help us put the event on is special.

  • We had a team meeting this week, and I said this is the latest in the year where I don't even know who our best five are. We are trying to figure that out going into the pro season. We need to see how they play at the “Mo” and then figure out who will play for the SEC Championships. A 54-hole tournament will be huge for us.
