I am a long time Lance fan but I understand why people suspect Lance. There is some smoke if not fire on the topic.

Lance was a known disciple of Dr. Michele Ferrari - who was an advocate of PED, especially EPO.

Some - including Frankie Andrieu (and his wife especially) and Jonathan Vaughters have been quoted including an instant message stream specifically calling out Lance.

And others - there are many pro cyclists suspicious of Lance.

But Phelps has never been tainted with suspicion.

You can add at least 5 to the total of 20...maybe even 6.

-Phelps will get 3 more
-Peirsol and Lochte should each get a medal in the 200 backstroke
-Lochte may also medal in the 200 IM

Its looking like the US will get around 30 medals or so.

Lochte is pretty definite in IM. He is probably Phelps's biggest roadblock to the 8 golds. Women will medal in their medley relay. Hoff should medal in the 800 free. Crocker will medal in the 100 fly with Phelps. So 30 looks about right (sure I am missing 1 or 2 other medal events).

Well, so much for Hoff and the 800. Pretty disappointing olympics for her to say the least.

The USA women are underchieving, all things considered.....Hoff and Ziegler not making finals in the 800 is huge disappointment. Hoff has a reason to be tired after her schedule. But not Ziegler - who has raced just once so before the 800.

I have no doubt Phelps works very hard but they say the hardest worker is Eric Vendt. I think that is a case of MP's body makeup providing a significant advantage.

nobody wants to call a medal for WR holder Ian Crocker? or even a semi road block for Phelps?

Vendt does have a reputation for being a very hard worker. He is a distance freestyler and occasional 400 IM swimmer.

Phelps probably does have physiological advantages (over everyone). One of the most impressive things thought about Phelps is that he swims less freestyle than Vendt and probably every other elite middle distance guy. Yet he is clearly the world's fastest 200 free swimmer. Probably would be the fastest 400 free swimmer too.

And he's the fastest IMer, one of the top 3 backstrokers, and the top flyer in the world. Oh - he also has the American record in the 100 free.

As for Crocker - he may be playing rope-a-dope but he did not swim well in prelims of the 100 fly today. He is 13th fastest going in to semis. Phelps was 2nd fastest. I think Phelps gets the WR and the gold tomorrow night.

Rebecca Soni takes GOLD in the in the 200 breast with a WR, beating "Lethal Liesal Jones" of Australia! A great Olympics by the young American.

Lochte takes the GOLD in the 200 back with a WR. Piersol takes the SILVER. Glad to see Lochte get the gold.

Lochte, finally an individual gold. He takes down 1 great, can he take down Phelps in 25 minutes? What a double he's trying to pull off.

Though I really like Lochte, I don't want him to top Phelps in the 200 IM

I do. Lochte's a UF grad, I have to root for him.

yes... like how he occasionally got 2nd at the olympics in 2000 and 2004.

Phelps wins GOLD in the 200 IM with his 6th WR. Lochte couldn't make it a race after his gold in the 200 back, taking the BRONZE.

Phelps is a damn machine. I was expecting that one to be sort of close but he blew away the field again.
S.S.Aggie

Other than the one relay, his races haven't even been remotely close. He won by over 2 seconds in this race in which people thought he might lose.
BuffyEmu

The 200 fly was pretty close, but that was just cause he got water in his goggles. He's just on a completely different level than every other athlete in the world right now. His dominance is just amazing to watch.

We've only seen domination on this level a few times (The 1st Dream Team, Tiger Woods when he won the Masters and US Open by ridiculous amounts).

Muhammad Ali should be on that list.

This Cavic guy from Serbia looks like he could really challenge Phelps in the 100 fly final

100 fly could be close for sure. Crocker is very good and has been resting for this all week. Quick swims make me nervous, slightest hiccup and it's tough to recover. But, Phelps seems to have a knack for making races that should be close...not so close.

Medley relay is a gimme unless someone DQs. Americans will have the best in 2 of the 4 strokes and their worst leg (breast) got 4th this year in their respective 100. I don't think the US men have ever not gotten 1st in this event.

I didn't think that this could possibly be true, but it is (except for the 80 Moscow boycott). That's some true American kickassitude.

Some awesome swims by the Americans last night. Soni's 200 BR win over Leisel was incredible. She has been the true standout of the women - more so than Coughlin.

Lochte lost silver by .01 to Cseh. Damn. Even fresh I don't think he would have beaten Phelps but it would have been even more interesting.

I think Phelps takes the 100 fly in a great race. I don't think Cavic can improve much from his lifetime bests already. Phelps time last night was very good considering the 200IM swim just 20 mins earlier. If you guys ever raced a 200 IM you'd know how tiring it is. Phelps had no prelims so has will have nearly a full day's rest for the 100 fly. If he can go 50.9 tired, what will he go fresh? I expect him to go out faster and his already awesome 2nd 50 will take care of anyone that beats him at the 50. Phelps touched 6th at the 50 last night, then finished 1st in his heat.

Crocker looked good last night too. I think it will be Phelps 49.9, Crocker at or under his WR for the silver, and Cavic bronze.
