Since the Men's swim team has both events scheduled for the same days, it seems obvious they would split the team to swim both meets. Is there some reason for that? Thanks.

Probably only take top tiered swimmers to the better meet in Tenn.

My money is on women and best male divers to Tennessee (great men's diving program) and men's team to Houston.

I think I'm more in agreement with Look Out Below. Though not controlling, it seems to make more sense in light of the Men's away meet the previous weekend. Guess we'll know soon enough.

My money is what LOB said, but the UH Invitational is only for the men who didn't travel to Boston. I doubt coming off of the big trip that they'll send any of the same guys to a meet this weekend - not really their MO.

I think very few of the men's side would go to either. Certainly no swimmers are going to Tennessee.

Usually Holmes schedules the Cougar invite 'just in case' but even if they do go he takes a handful, if that. Maybe just the guys that haven't traveled yet plus Omar.

As for the men's diver's, I think most of them are going to UT. Not sure about Page-Kahn as he's been injured lately.

I believe the women's team, swimmers and divers, are all going to UT. I wouldn't be surprised if any girls who aren't on the travel squad go to the Cougar invite.

I remember when the girls actually swam the Houston Invite a few years ago - Heiss dropped something nasty (4:38?) in the 500 free. Never figured out why that meet isn't a big enough draw to get in some big competition, but the SMU Invite is.

Because, though they've fallen off recently, SMU always guaranteed you a top 10-20 team to swim against.

Those 'big' SMU meets usually consist of 6-8 swimmers and one diver though too. Not anywhere near full teams.

I think if Houston puts its' best foot forward and tried to pull us and one or two other big name teams in that it could have a very solid invite.

Didn't realize the meet is LCM. Why?

Just the morning to give people some chances for Trials cuts. Evening sessions will be SCY.

2012 is an Olympic year. They are partially rested. They're trying to get trials cuts.
AGBlastoff

Right way to do it, in my opinion (prelims LC, evening Yards). Give chances to make Trials cuts (and, BTW, US Open cuts which have to be in LCM this year), but also let those teams looking for NCAA cuts do that in the finals.

Makes sense. "Live Results" implies that finals are also LCM (says "400 free" ). But I assume the 400 free will really be a 500 free.

Yeah sort of odd...in both sets the left hand says 400, but when you look at the results they're listed as 500 frees.

The day someone invents a live results system that works well, they'll be a thousandaire!
halco87
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Live Results also implies "Live".

So we can anticipate a good number of swimmers at the meet trying to make various cuts. Then we should expect a good fast meet. Correct?
AGBlastoff
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yep. So far, living up to it, except for Tennessee, who seems to be less rested than everyone else.

Free relays getting by the best they can with the injuries...going to be tough. But check out the middle legs of that medley. 58.5 and 52.5?? That'll do....

Louisville men very impressive too.

Henry and Ibanez. Both redshirting.

Ibanez raced at the Pan American games not long ago. What is her injury?

And I remember someone said Henry was injured but I don't remember what it was.

Are they really missing the entire season?
Aquabullet

@Spice - Ibanez had an accident on her bicycle and I *think* hurt 2 vertabrae, not sure to what extent. (That's what I heard anyway, such a simple piece of news tends to travel fast and correctly so I'm not doubting it)
Haven't asked anyone when she'll be back so I don't know.

Henry had an ACL problem (surgery?) and if I recall correctly, LOB said in an earlier thread that she should be back in spring?

Also, I believe the remaining girls and a few guys went down to the UH Invite. So keep an eye out there for results. My guess would be to look for the freshmen that didn't go to Boston along with Burley, Wheeler and possibly Enriquez, if he's allowed to compete.

Nice swimming from the girls so far, McElhany just put up a 60.61 in the 100 fly, nice swim from her.

Megan Latone hitting a 2.03 in the 200 free is a very nice surprise.

As for yesterday, that lack of a few blue chip free sprinters is worrying...

FWIW, word on the street is nothing's been decided for sure on either one, though one looks more definite than the other at this point. Saying both are definitely redshirting, at this point, would be incorrect.

Is Henry's ACL the same knee she injured in high school before coming to A&M? Knee injuries are a bit unusual in swimmers that aren't breaststrokers.

Some good times yesterday and this morning. McElhaney's fly time was very nice. I was glad to see that because her IM was a bit slower than I thought she has gone before.

We do have a 50 free problem....Not one girl under 23 secs.

Breeja is so far under the Trials cuts it isn't funny. If she stays healthy I don't see how she isn't in the final heat at Trials. Maybe she gets her NCAA A cuts tonight and tomorrow.

Pretty sure it's the same one (which is likely why they are being so cautious this time around). And she IS a breaststroker -- a very good one at that.

Agreed on McElhaney. If she comes around it would be fantastic.

Our entire A relay, including CMac's leadoff of 22.83 was under 23. Paige Miller led off another relay in 23.1. And remember Ibanez didn't even swim. I feel a 'little' better about our situation here. Would still love to have a home run hitter though...

I'm calling a 58 tonight on Larson.

58.68 for Larson. I don't think it's too soon to start talking about fighting for 2nd at OTs.

miles to go before she's even close to 2nd in the 100 lcm. Lets see how the 200 goes tomorrow. If she's around 2:29 or faster, we'll talk team usa.

Apocolyptus - why so skeptical of her 100 LCM time? She swam a 1:08.45 yesterday. The 2nd time at the 2008 trials, which had "suits" - was 1:07.50. Larson's seed time was 1:07.63. I'm not sure where that time came from since she didn't race last summer.

The three fastest Americans right now are Hardy, Kunavich (17 years old), and Soni. All are under 1:08. No one else is under 1:09. I somehow don't believe Breeja is really rested based on her swims in Austin. She also hasn't been pushed in Tennessee.
TheSituation80

Miles? It will be a shock if she makes it but I think counting out Larson is a bad move. Soni will win decisively IMO. Hardy's best time without a suit is 1:05.9 I think. Will it be a dog fight for 2nd? I think so.

At 2010 Nationals Hardy did not have a good 50 Free, 100 Breast finals. If she wants to go on the team in any event she may have to sacrifice one.

1:07 was a converted time according to the meet info. I read that yesterday was her best LCM time by about 2 seconds.

I'm absolutely not counting her out but saying that Hardy and Soni are "under 1:08" is like saying Phelps and Lochte are "under 2:00" in the 200 IM.

I have no doubt that she will be in the A final in Omaha, but it is way too early to put her in the 1:05 class. Luckily there are 7+ months until Trials.

I wouldn't say Larson isn't somewhat rested. The times that the whole team are throwing up are much better than the Texas meet two weeks ago.

That said, I know it's not a full taper so you can bank on practically all of them being faster in February and March. With a full taper and some folks to push her in a race (which she sure as hell didn't get in this meet), a 57 at NCAA's looks like it could be in the cards. You can count on less than one hand the number of college girls capable of going what she went last night. Pretty incredible performance.

2:28 200 BR for Larson

I assumed Larson is somewhat rested. But based on season goals there is no reason for her to have a big taper. She is way under OT cuts. And she blew past the NCAA A cut for the 100. She was just a tenth or two off in Austin.

I didn't say it would be easy to make the USA team. But Larson's rate of improvement is way higher right now than Soni or Hardy, both much older.

What's up with Ellen Quirke's 100 time today? She had a great time - and 5th fastest. Her splits were almost even. Yet her 50 yesterday was nothing special at all.
