I am disappointed in the outcome of the meet, but definitely not disappointed in any of the participants. We tried hard and never quit. Can't ask for anything else.

Seriously, will someone please explain - I'll try to stay rational - why the Florida runner in the men's 4 x 400 wasn't DQ'd? I've seen a number of track meets, and I've never seen anything that flagrant.

A good question that the NCAA needs to answer.

I am "just disappointed."
I've been advocating periodically on this and other TexAgs websites for facility upgrades for Pat Henry. But that's all I can do -- advocate. I don't have the resources to do much more than that.
For my part, Pat Henry is the most successful coach of all the Aggie coaches. What's he got -- 7 national titles?
And we can go on the websites of our top challengers and view their superb facilities -- Oregon, Florida, Arkansas, Texas, LSU. For Pat Henry to win championships in that environment is just remarkable.
I'm in no way an Aggie "big cigar." I just hope that our "big cigars" or the 12th Man Foundation will reward Pat Henry sometime soon with superior facilities.
I realize football is the "bell cow," and I'm a huge fan of Kevin Sumlin and Aggie football. But, c'mon.

Little consolation for our 10 lost points.

UF would have finished 3rd either way.

I think there was a possibility we could been up there for the 4x4 if we had Kamaria but that inside lane was too tough for us to overcome-that's where the DQ in the SECs hurt.

Thanks, Bat61. Virtually all of the posters here are true Ags - not just poor-mouths.

I hope my post didn't offend you. It wasn't intentional.

The thing that stinks about the Florida DQ is that, apparently, it doesn't do a thing to compensate for the points we would have gotten.

Not at all. No offense taken. just hate to see all the bad breaks the Ags got this year. It probably added to the tone of my post.

There should be some option for the team that was fouled. I am not sure what that would be though.

Florida got DQ'd for impedance, we got DQ'd for unsportsmanlike. A previous poster said lot ohe is starting to hate Florida. They are certainly becoming a top rival in a lot of sports. I think their track coach was SEC Women's coach of the year mainly because he got us disqualified.

I probably just don't know the intracacies of the rules. But now that Florida has apparently decided to up the ante to full contact track, it occurs to me that one way to guarantee that your closest opponent doesn't pick points is to deliberately take one or more of the closest competitors completely out of the race - as was done with us.

I'm not advocating it, and I think the tactic is clearly outrageous, but it apparently would be effective, since there is no recourse for the fouled team.

I think the NCAA should consider that the fouling team forfeit all their points and be declared ineligible for the next season, if the foul is ruled clearly flagrant and intentional.

you will get a shot at redemption (or revenge) at outdoors.

Should be interesting.

I am disappointed as well. We needed several events to fall our way, but unfortunately for the most part they went the opposite to what we needed in order for us to win a National Team Title.

An outdoor track facility is currently in the pipeline and Coach Henry has proudly been exhibiting the conceptual plans. We just need to get the facility under construction sooner rather than later.

The lane assignments in the the relays were determined by times. In the individual races, it was random draw after grouping the seeds (1-5-9-13, 2-6-10-14, etc). Relays they group seeds 9-12, 5-8, and 1-4 then in each group you get preferred lane assignments based on times.

Florida is our main athletic competition in the SEC and will probably continue to be such for many years.

Directors Cup Final Standings by academic year:

Florida in 2012-13 (2), in 2011-12 (2), in 2010-11 (4), in 2009-10 (2)
A&M in 2012-13 (5), in 2011-12 (9), in 2010-11 (8), in 2009-10 (6)

No other SEC university is even close.

On the subject of the Director's Cup, if our objective is to be a top ten school or better every year, we really need to add at least one or two more men's sports and another woman's sport. Right now it looks like baseball will also be a points no-show. It would also help a lot for our AD to bond with the other SEC schools and get equestrian added to the list.

Our problem is that with only nine men's sports and ten woman's that equalify for Director's Cup points, we have no leeway to "loose" points with a sport that can't get into the top 32 every year. In a way, we are already screwed this year by the lack of points from cross country and men's basketball. That we dropped three places with the men because UF decided to literally toss us out of the relay is a lot more important to A&M than to Florida, which has some extra sports.

For all his faults, it was clear Bill Byrne was committed to making A&M a complete athletic university, as opposed to primarily a football school. I wonder whether Hyman is equally committed, or more of a Wally Groff guy.

For the record both A&M and Florida 4x400 relay team were disqualified.
I don’t think anyone has and should criticize Pat Henry. He has done wonders for the A&M program.
The fact that some top recruit did not want to come especially two female high school athletes who will be leaving for Texas to go to Oregon, says that something attracts them to Oregon rather than College Station where that can be close to home and have their family see them compete. It cannot be the coaches, maybe the outdoor facility as some have touted previously. Whatever it is I know the coaches will be looking at it. We could only speculate because we just don’t have all the information
With regard to the overall indoor championship, it is evident that it is difficult for us to win the indoor championship with focus on sprints and hurdles. It is just not working. Every year things go wrong for the Aggies at the indoor meet. It seems that bad luck is following us at the indoors. We have seen it this year. Let me remind you that it has been happening for some time now. A couple of years ago Natasha Ruddock got injured and could not compete in the 60m hurdles when she would have been the favorite with Gabby Mayo. It also happened when Joey Roberts false start in the 800m (would you believe the 800m) when he was one of the favorites to win. Natasha Rogers getting injured and could not compete again for when she would have been the favorite for her events. Last year Deon Lendore got injured in the finals and could not run the relays and we place down the field in the 4x400. These are just a few of many examples of the indoor disappointments over the years. Each time when it happened, were we able to rebound “NO” because we don’t have depth for the indoors. We lost 10 points with Kamaria Brown in the 200m and we lost the championship. Oregon women lost points in several events, Sasha Wallace didn’t finish the 60m hurdles, Jasmine Todd was second ranked in the long jump but ended up 7th but Oregon still managed to win the Championship because of their depth. They won the 800m, 400m and 4x400m relay on the last day. Look further at the Oregon men, who were not expected to be factor in the title race, they scored in 5000m, DMR, 1 mile, 60m hurdles, 400m, 3000m, 4x400m. Look at their depth.
It is not entirely difficult to win with a few events but all athletes must maximize and perform at their best but has not happened indoors yet. We always have some disappointment.
Look a tu women, they almost win the championship with a few athletes scoring in the 60, 400m, pole vault, high jump and 4x400m. They had 3 women in the 400m and all three scored well for them. We needed that to happen for us but it just does not happen indoors for us. We had three in the 60m, three in 200m and two in the 400m.
If we look at the outdoor events we have a lot more events to score 100m, 200m, 400m, 100m H, 400M H, 4 x100m and 4 x 400m. We can definitely win the outdoors if we score well in these events. These events can give us 50 plus points with bonus coming from our field athletes.
With regard to the outdoor facility, the fact that we are now in the SEC instead of the Big should also be a motivator to get the outdoor facility. Best track conference is the SEC and we could attract the best athletes to compete at our facility. The point has already been made that Texas host conference and regional meets and we could do the same. The other important point for me is that some of our track graduates can stay on after graduating and train here as pros. We can also encourage other PROS to come train in College Station and this help our program further. This would attract recruits. Oregon has been doing this for years with the Oregon Track club with great focus on distance running. Oregon has attracted a lot of distance recruits this way. Our “Sprint Station” track club will develop further with a better facility. The fans would have so much to look forward to as well.
Again sorry for being so long in my post but it is just so much food for thought.

Hits keep coming from the indoor meet.

Aldrich Bailey to miss up to 6 weeks after breaking foot in 200m final.

Wow. That's really a big lost. Bailey runs the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400, besides the individual events 200m and 400m. I really hope he can recover fully in time for SEC and Nationals. It is really difficult with these injuries, even though you recover, it is take some additional time for him to get his full fitness and form to compete favorably.

Does anyone know the status of Kamaria Brown injury?

No doubt Byrne was and has been a lightening rod for the way he handled the athletic departments both here and Nebraska. But the record is clear that Nebraska was a better athletic department in all sports when he left, as we were when he left.

I respect the opinions of those who believe Byrne over-emphasized the non-revenue sports. I personally follow all Aggie sports, which is why I'm on this board instead of just the football board. I would rather follow the Florida example than Alabama. (That's not the apparent turn to full-contact track, but rather excelling in every sport.) I certainly don't want to return to the Wally Groff example of neglecting everything except football.

Good post colorado. I respect your opinions. I too love the non-revenue sports and don't believe there is a way to over-emphasize them.

I just call into question the way in which he opened up the checkbook (spending money he didn't have and was forced to borrow from academics). A lot of people much less intelligent than us could have gone to the store and bought some of the prettiest coaches in the window. I also have many reasons to believe he operated the dept. based on what would personally benefit him financially, which is likely one of the reasons why he eventually exited in the fashion he did.

The following comment appeared on the popular running site letsrun.com...have no idea if there is any truth to this post, but it is interesting.

RE: Best event at indoors was the fight between A&M and Florida Coaches.
3rd leg - florida fouls a&m on 1st turn (thats why they were DQ'ed) then the a&m runner pushes (flagrant) to keep from falling after florida cuts them off on the 2nd turn. a&m was DQ'ed for the flagrant push

after the race and all of the discussions are going on, then the real ethnicity of mike holloway came out.. he was pointing in the face of pat henry and dropping the f-bomb and my personal favorite was the part where he said and i quote "you don't know who the f#

Wow. Surprised there aren't some NCAA repercussions involved in the aftermath of that. If you have to call in police because of your behavior while you are at work, it usually means you're in a job you don't deserve to have. That said, it sounds like Coach Henry handled himself as best he could considering the circumstances. The Florida coach sounds like a thug.

I can confirm that the Florida coach came after Coach Henry after the meet. The Florida coach was upset that Coach Henry protested and had the Florida 4 x 400 team dq'd. The fact that he was mad about that after what he did at the SEC meet really is unbelievable.

The Florida coach was dropping f bombs all over the place and saying Coach Henry didn't know who he was messing with. He also was acting as if he was going to physically attack Coach Henry.

I know that there have been conversations with the Florida AD and with the NCAA about this situation. I do not know if anything will come from this, but I would guess that this is not the last we hear of this situation.

One other thing, the Florida coach is lucky that his act was not seen by a few specific people that were in attendance. If this would have escalated, he might well have found himself on the wrong side of a physical altercation and you can almost guarantee that he would be out of a job. He really should think about apologizing to Coach Henry and thanking the coaches from other schools that kept this from getting any further out of control.

He got SEC Women's Indoor Coach of the Year because he got us disqualified in the women's 4 X 400. Maybe he's upset that the NCAA did not dq our men's relay team at nationals and he had to share the trophy. I"ll be curious to see if Pat invites UF to an indoor meet next year. I never understood why we got dq'd last week. It should have been obvious to everyone who saw it why UF did.
